I have purchased a GSD and the previous owner did not care about the "papers" being up to date and correct etc...from the importer. So, I am in a situation that I want to register him with the USCA and start competing. But, after repeated attempts to have the importer to contact me I get a reply from a subordinate stating these days he is in another country. Avoidance is what I would call it and bad business! Is there anyway, if I have all the financial papers on him I can get around this intractable situation? I have the copies of where the importer brought the dog in from Germany (registered with VSD) and is in his name. But he will not sign him over to the previous owner nor myself. I am about ready to sue this character back to the stone age! Thanks, Hans

You know I would bet the judges could make a fortune, calling breeders/importers that have not sent papers. I wonder how fast things would change, if you were to get a call from an SVJUDGE?

Stuff like this can get sticky. You bought a dog without papers that was imported. The Importer may not be able to get the papers because of ownership problems when he bought the dog. The importer may not have been paid in full or for some other legitimate reason may not be willing to release papers. You may be the recipient of someone's battle they were unable to win. Your best course of action is through the person you bought the dog from. You purchase agreement should cover the registration obligations. If that's not possible, get help any way you can but you will most likely need to show a continuous ownership trail from the current owner of record to you.

A seller getting a call about papers from an SV judge would not do any good, even if you could talk one into making that call, which I'm betting you could not. ss

No, I am talking about paying the SV judge. I would be thinking "cottage industry".

Hey Guys thanks for the input and help! Since I last checked the board I received an email stating This dog was never sold for breeding so the pedigree was enough for this customer. I have a photocopy of the SV registration transfering ownership from the breeder to the importer. I have checked with the Sv and the paperwork is correct and legit. But, the importer did not transfer ownership to the previous owner before myself. The only legal redeeming piece in the puzzle is I have the bill of sale from the importer to the former owner. So there is a distinct paper trail to myself. When the previous owner sold the dog to me I made sure in the contract I had his tattoo # and his full name etc...included in the framework of the contract. I had a feeling about this! What bothers me is the comment from the importer about "breeding". In the contract there is nothing stating anything about breeding or not breeding. I have a feeling there is something very shady going on here.... Is this a common practice? A kennel/importer potentially retaining breeding rights and witholding the papers to ensure this? Hans

Who are you dealing with?

If you are dealing with an SV registered dog and not a VSD? (whatever that is) registered dog and the paper trail is intact. You can apply for a new pedigree through the SV or through UScA to the SV. The process takes a few months. The request for a new pedigree is published in the SV magazine to allow anyone with an interest an opportunity to include their input. Once the process is completed, the SV issues a new pedigree with you as the owner.
