FAKE Pedigree Information - Page 1

Since 11 Dec 2016, PDB has required that users include the date of birth, breed book and registration number when entering a dog without any progeny. (see URL at bottom). This was done so that the Pedigree Admins can try to authenticate the pedigree by checking the registration number and date of birth.

Some people object to posting this information stating that it allows people to copy their dogs information and create Fake papers for their dogs. But everyone in the world has access to the AKC database and if they know the dogs name, they can get the dogs registration number, date of birth and color. Everyone also has access to the SV database, ENCI (Italian database), and database's of many, many other countries and also ones like WinSIS-X and working-dog.Eu, so this objection really is not valid. So, if you see any dog entered since the first of 2017, who has no date of birth, it is potentially a FAKE Pedigree.

We realize that it can take several months to get a young pup registered, but even then 95% of pups are registered by the time the dog is 6 months old so an older dog should have a breed book and registration number.

We would like to just cancel these dogs as we feel that anyone who does not enter the dogs registration number, may not in fact have a registered purebred dog. But we will instead just mark them as needing date of birth and registration number, but may sometime in the future decide that they should be cancelled.

When starting a new pedigree, the dog that you enter MUST HAVE A SIRE AND A DAM with complete information, or it will be cancelled. Of course we can not expect you to have all the information about other dogs downline in the pedigree.

PDB was created to help people trace the pedigrees of their Purebred registered dogs so that they could use this information in their breeding programs. We are trying to make it as valid and useful as possible, but need your help to do so.

Fantom, how does that work if I want to put dogs on that are 'old' dogs I have owned or worked with ? Of course if I'd just bought a pedigree puppy, I would expect to have its Kennel Club registration number; but with dogs I might want to put on PDB, to complete existing entries, I might not (still / ever ) have held the KC number. Or in some cases, exact birthdates. I do know the registered names and will have seen the pedigrees/registration certificates at some point, but do not have them all in my possession. (e.g. One owner is since deceased; another never really concerned himself with the paperwork and it got left behind when he sold up and moved on.) And the UK KC online services are a bit unhelpful in this regard. One of the reasons the gaps still exist with dogs I have already put up on here is the incompleteness of dogs' details, other than USA and German historical records. So the computer does not automatically fill in all the blanks.

These would be, nonethless, genuine records. Can you advise ?

What I wrote mainly concerns new dogs who have no connection to any other dog on PDB. ie: dogs without any progeny in PDB. A huge percentage of the dogs entered in PDB are puppies, or dogs under 6 months old. These are the ones that we want to have entered with as much information as possible.
We of course know that people will not have the information on "downline" dogs in a pedigree, but if you include as much as you know, it sometimes helps us find more information.
There is no computer program that fills in blanks. If a dog is on PDB, that dog is connected to your pedigree by your entering it's EXACT name. If once you enter a dogs name and there is no information, and magically information appears the next day, or even that day, it is because the Pedigree admins (like me) have researched and entered the information. We spend hours daily looking up dogs and validating information and entering new information. There are only 3, sometimes 4 of us for all the dogs and all the breeds on PDB.
That is why we get so frustrated when someone enters a new puppy with just a name. They obviously know the date of birth and registration information (at least the breed book info). What is more frustrating is to have someone enter a new puppy without a sire or dam. Seriously..... did the pup just drop out of the sky?
So enter all that you know. You would be amazed at how a little bit of information from you can lead us in the right direction to complete a pedigree.  Even just the breed book tells us what country and organization to start looking in.

TY Fantom, that is clearer now. Hope it will encourage me to go back and fill in some of those 'downline' gaps some time soon ! (When I get a clear half-day or so !).

Thanks for all the work you put in to try and make this website as reliable as possible. As you can see from my profile, I also try to help in the way that I can by completing missing information about some dogs that I see while browsing the website for whatever reason, as I believe this is the best site of its kind and it is everyone's job to keep it "clean".
For the sake of this forum post, I would like to give you my breeder's perspective regarding this. Some time ago it was possible to "register a litter", where you could name all the dogs of your litter, their suffix, and basic information (I believe breed book included). Since this option has disappeared, it is kind of frustrating to register the dogs one by one. I still do it, but I'm the only one of two breeders that I know that still do it, and in the past this was a regular practice for almost all breeders I know. I get that you had to remove this option, but for someone who registers 6 dogs at a time, the priority is normally stud, mother and name now, since doing more than that in 6 different pages is very time consuming.
I'm not saying you are not right about what you are saying, you are, but I just wanted to share one potential cause for this problem.

I also add my entire litters and have not found it to be that time consuming. Just go back in your browser, change the puppy name and registration number to reflect the next pup in the litter. The rest of the information doesn't change including sire and dam and the date of birth.

Ok, but I still think it should be much quicker. I do it like that as well, or with multiple tabs, but I think the old version should still be available, even if hidden on the website on the mating outcome tool for example. There could be an option where you create the planned litter and afterwards you could register the puppies of that litter on that page.

Anything like that is a major programming change, and Oli is the only one that can do that. I am an ex-programmer and let me tell you, what seems like a simple change can sometimes affect other parts of the program that you would not even dream about.
A good programmer also need lots of good testers and we do not have a wealth of people available for all the jobs that need to be done on PDB.
Since there is a reasonable way to handle it now, I would doubt that Oli would make it a high priority..... but then again ... I am not Oli.

Software developer myself, I know how hard it can be :). I hope I didn't sound harsh, my intention was just to give another viewpoint of the issue.
