Kalibeck

Last night when I was grooming my 5 month old puppy, who is teething, I noticed that his lower left adult canine is coming in next to, on the inside of, his puppy canine. Is this something I should address with the vet right away? Or should I watch it & act if it doesn't resolve on it's own? My gut says the adult tooth will push the other one out, given enough chewing, etc., but will the adult tooth move into the correct spot if the puppy tooth doesn't fall out soon? The puppy tooth is a little loose, but not very, & I know it bothers him, he won't let me manipulate it at all. What do you think???Thanks, jo

I've seen that in puppies. Most will just fall out on their own and the permanent canine will be in the right place. One minute it's there, the next time you look it will be gone. Every now and then one needs to be extracted by the vet, but in my experience that is rare.

If the permanent tooth is coming in correctly and the baby tooth is starting to come loose, watch it for a couple if weeks but then have it removed if it does not come out by itself. If the adult tooth does not appear to come in in the proper position, go now. Little expense for a big piece of mind.

Thank-you for your input..I have to work this afternoon, & I'll check him again when I get home, & my hubby will keep me posted while I'm at work. I didn't worry so much over my kids teeth! LOL! I'll let you know what happens, thanks again, jackie osborne

Keep an eye on it, but don't worry. The itty-bitty baby tooth is generally no match for the HUGE canine beneath it! SS

My princess had a double tooth for almost two weeks. I took her to the vet he siad not worry and he was right. All of a sudden she had one BIG tooth.

Shelley, hi! We just noticed this last night, there was the baby tooth, and just to the inside of it was a little white nub, about the same size as the baby tooth, and this morning, when I tried to check it, he really flinched when I lifted his muzzle on that side. I've been giving him frozen chew toys, (kongs, etc.)hoping that the chilled toys would give him some relief, but he's even chewing on the other side of his mouth, poor little guy! Carl said that he seems okay tonight, i'm at work, but Beckett won't let him look at it tonight. How long should I wait before I address it, if it doesn't fall out soon? I don't want to mess up his bite! Thanks, jackie

Like I said, don't worry about it. Give him ice cubes to chew on in his water dish. I buy short marrow bones (the middle part of cow femur, sold as soup bones in 2" lengths, only the really thick walled ones) and leave them in the freezer so when you give them to the pups they are cold and take longer to get the marrow out. Yes, they do leave greasy residue on the carpet, but it cleans up) If the tooth doesn't fall out in a month we'll talk about it, but it will. SS
