Hey Everyone,

When looking at a pedigree, how do you tell which dogs were West German and which ones were DDR? After German unification, were all dogs registered SV?

All dogs were registered SV after the wall fell, yes. "True" DDR dogs were registered DDR. To tell the difference you need to go back a few generations and see the designations. My dog, Qira vom Linmarc, is 100% DDR lines, if you'd like an example pedigree to look at.

No the dogs were spread about, many different people from many countries purchased them. The progeny would be then registered in the residing country so all over the map. A DDR dog has a DDR registry number.

A DDR dog has a DDR registry number except for the beginning years of 1949-1954 when the SV set aside a series of numbers to be used by the DDR.
These  4 series
SZ 720,001-730,000
SZ 770,001-780,000
SZ 810,001-820,000
SZ 880,001-890,000
Then around 1955, East Germany started issuing their own numbers.
If you look in the SV Stud books, you will not find this series of numbers. I have found one book issued in Merseburg in 1949 which has the series 720,001-726,000 so I personally refer to this series of numbers as the Merseburg numbers. But I have not been able to find any other books with any more of these numbers.

Many of the DDR dogs, especially in the later years, also were registered by the SV and have an SZ number

Yvonne,

Do you have a compiled list of those dogs 49-54 from your site? I would enjoy having that. I started a list but daunting doing it piece meal I gave up.

It would be quick and easy to write a sql search of your database to get that info most complete. You could cross check in excel whole process a couple hours of work. Can be done from the web side but it could crash your server. See if your web master or data person can do this for you.

To the OP: This info is of no relevance to seeing if your dog is from DDR or West lineage. There are many people posting DDR Stud, DDR Dog's & Puppies for sale that are NOT even close. Always best to post or pm the pedigree there are a few here that can help with the eastline dogs and plenty with the west. Good Luck

I am always willing to help people with a few dogs info, but after putting 20 years into the research on DDR dogs, I not quite ready yet to give that to the world. I could enter some pedigree info on PDB if people asked about specific DDR dogs, and I am happy to do that.
Gigante you are asking me to share my research, but I just did a quick check on dogs with your kennel name and very very few have any reg numbers or any info except for sire and dam. Do you register and title your dogs and x-ray hips/elbows. I don't see any info. Why are you not sharing like the rest of the GSD world?

Sounds like yr standard BYB.

If there is one thing i cannot stand its the hording of information. If i can, I will share my information no matter how long it took me to aquire it. It's the only way to keep the GSD world informed and true.

What good is it if knowledge dies with someone?

by vk4gsd on 17 December 2016 - 21:12

Knowledge creators work hard, it is entirely their choice who, when and where to share it with.

Most folks only know how to exploit the work of others for their personal gain.

If you cherish something I would not make it freely available so lazy people can exploit it.
