As it stands now, this is the limits: Breeding Age Limits:
According to AKC rules, a dam must be at least 8 months old, but not more than 12 years old, on the date of mating. A sire must be at least 7 months old, but not more than 12 years old, on the date of mating.
That might be fine and dandy for the male but, come on now, 12 years old!!!!
I can't think of one person who would, or ever could, consider themselves an ethical breeder that would do that.
The only ones that could benefit from such breedings are the GREEDERS!!!!! And the AKC of course. I am liking to have to go through them less and less all the time. They say they are there to promote a dogs well being, and offer to educate , but they truly are there for the money. Which in and of itself is fine, they are a business.
I have contacted them with THE PROOF of falsified registrations from one particular breeder in the past, to which they asked, what did I want them to do about it! For real.... I simply told them if they could care less about someones breeding program, to keep the record straight and true, that they can shove their AKC papers up their asses!!
I would rather take less money for a dog without AKC than allow the scumbum greeders out there to undo my 20 years of doing.
Well, this is just a thought. Don't know if it would do any good or not. I search around the internet quite often, usually looking up German Shepherds, and it never ceases to amaze me just how many ignorant people are, and how many German Shepherd experts are out there, mostly on Facebook.
I see German Shepherd clubs, breeders and individuals setting up shop to assist the guliable. No, I am not an expert of any sort, nor have I ever claimed to be one, but c'mon now with some of these idiots,
You almost think if they are that stupid they deserve what they get. It ain't them that end up paying for it though, it's the poor dogs that do.
You would think that with access to so much information available on any number of subjects, people could make educated choices for themselves, but still choose not to. Oh well, I guess you really can't fix stupid.
I just hate seeing dogs being so mistreated and used, No dog should have to suffer at the hand of their owner. {for what it's worth, this coming from a person that shares their ice cream or muffins on a daily basis with all her dogs} just my 2 cents worth.

Too many people gain too much money from keeping the KC's exactly as they are.
The only changes will be a better marketing machine.

GSDCA might be able to institute something and push the AKC to follow their rule but that's unlikely because they have plenty of people in power there that might want to breed a 10 year old champion just one last time to "keep the line going" as well.

Sadly, I think the almighty dollar (or whatever currency is used) will prevent any change being voluntarily made by the kennel clubs. Just my thoughts...

My male was 10 years old when he sired both my A and B litter. He was in fantastic shape and I'm glad I actually did it. Without that I wouldn't have Athos, Asia, Bruna or Brava.
What concerns me more than that is the beginning age of a female. Seriously? UNDER A FRICKIN YEAR??????

Females...well...another story. I would agree with a 10yr ceiling, and even that is not something I would personally do.

Well, I posted this to the AKC Facebook page, don't know if they will let it ride, or not. in' holding my breath. When I feel strongly about an issue, as most of you know I do speak up. As 'The dogs champion', may I ask , what does the organization feel about this picture? Is this an acceptable whelping box? I would like to request that the AKC reconsider their age of consent, so to speak, for a female dog to have puppies recognized by the AKC beyond the age of 10. As it is now, the age is 12. Now some might feel that acceptable and appropriate, but many find it down right disgraceful, especially for large breed dogs. As a general rule, the only ones who benefit from this is of course the greedy breeder who could even consider this acceptable and the registry who collects the fee for the very unethical breeding of such a litter. I don't know of too many dogs that , but for THAT OLD GIRLS LITTER, THE BREED AS A WHOLE WILL SUFFER A TREMENDOUS LOSS. Some say 12 is acceptable for the smaller breeds. Really. I've bred Yorkies also, and can't think of any of them that would have benefited from a that late age breeding. Breeding dogs is a business to many a breeder, and dogs are deemed personal property, but the reality is, is they are living beings that deserve to be treated fairly. And that s all I am asking. just a little reconsideration of that registry age. We all know that puppy mill dogs , if no other dogs, will be spared two years of puppy producing, guaranteed. To many of those dogs that is four less litters in their lifes, at least four. This is just a thought, for now. Hopefully my post will stay and let the breeders weigh in. Time will tell. Thanks for the opportunity to make a suggestion.

this the picture I posted with my post at AKC, asking if acceptable.
This is disgusting to me. This is poor Sasha off Banks' public Facebook page, looking so nice and taken care of on the bare plastic pool. Isn't it terrific the care that is given to this dog and her pups.
What a reward for lining his pockets.
Mind my business you may ask. Well, this is my business. It makes me sick that people can do this, and this is older picture. She probly gonna be in this same tub next week.
Happy Thanksgiving Banks Haus, you had to remove your ad because we wanted to mind your business, just want to be sure when potential buyers search you out, your advertisment wasn't wasted!

Notwithstanding the differences between different sized breeds, the UK Kennel Club made the top limit 8 years, some years ago. ONE litter can be registered after 8 years, provided the breeder seeks clearance - in advance - to mate the bitch. So that is one change that the majority opinion managed to force on a Kennel Club.
