A friend had the same thing happen to his dog. No other issues, just thinning hair on ear tips. They had recently moved and the weather was changing. The vet had seen this before and said it was an allergy to a particular grass which is apparently a common problem for both people and pets in that area. He suggested an allergy shot and my friend was skeptical but lo and behold, it fixed the problem quickly. I don't know where you live, but this is on the East coast.
Another person had this problem and it was some type of fungus. That would be shown on a skin scraping.

Fungus (especially ringworm) can cause hair loss without rubbing or scratching. Most other causes such as insects or allergy will cause itching, and the dog will scratch and rub.

It might be worth trying an antifungal to see if it helps--it's not likely to be harmful. You can get some athlete's foot antifungal cream and put it on the ear tips once a day for 2 weeks and see if it doesn't start healing up.
