The Front page of the Business section of the Los Angeles Times,
Iams and Eukanuba, for overweight dogs (food), wet and DRY is being recalled. They have known about this as of 1/8/07. FDA is reporting insufficient evidence provided by maker for safety of the food, Causes Kidney failure.
My Moms dog (rottie) eats this (her and my dad treat her to much, so she is on reduced calorie food, Dad is in his 80's and Mom in her 70's and they can not resist her pleadings). I had my Mom change the food when I did. The Tech Vet argued with my MOM and told her she was "nuts" the recall was not on this food. Well guess what, it now is and Jewel is on her way to get her kidney's tested.

The Iams rep is saying the FDA is requesting they test further, by putting 50mg of chromeium (sp),(to control the blood sugar levels) and that would kill the dogs. They only put in .01 to control blood sugar levels and that amount is safe for them. So Iams is taking the chromeium (sp) out of it and they have been given until August to do so.
So what the FDA is saying is prove 50 mg kills the dogs, and .01 is safe and the only way to prove it is to kill some of them at the high levels and show the smaller amounts do not kill them. Iams is unwilling to do the test and kill some of them so they are taking it out of the food.
Since I am not a nutritionalist or chemist, I am only explaining what I was told. You have to come to your own conclusions.
I will post Jewels blood work, I am sure she is fine, she does not get the full amount of food recomended from them. Mom just called she had her blood work done, results tommorrow. When she got to the vets, they were taking all of the Iams dry Cat food from the shelves.

on the news this morning, they had a vet recomend, that you do not feed anything containing wheat or wheat products, unitl this is fully tested. She Included any dry food with wheat. They just do not know how far this is going to go yet. The wheat is containing melamnie (plastic).
Blood test can find the rat pooison, but a tissue sample has to locate the melamine.

So if the dogs are not sick now, does anyone understand the long term effects on the dogs? I am thinking since it can be found in tissue samples, it is not just being passed thru? (Melamine)

Long term, that is what I am thinking. I'll pay more for a bag of dog food, to give my pup a longer healthier life.

Great. I've been feeding Carol Eukanuba Weight Reduction formula for weeks, just starting to move him to Canidae Platinum.
He seems fine, but this scares the hell out of me nontheless. Most of my dogs are eating one formula of Eukanuba dry kibble or another. I just bought a van load of it. They all seem okay, but I won't be buying any more for awhile, that's for sure.
Bummer.

I have to wonder if this is affecting wheat germ oil!

We got Jewels blood work back. My mom got it and I think she stopped listening, the minute they told her there is a slight problem. So I do not know what was elevated, or how much. But they asked her to get all of her previous blood work from her old vet (all of this going on and our vet sold the practice, and the one who purchased the pratice is a nut case and I am being polite, so we are also at a new vet's) and they want to run her blood again in a week to see if any changes. She is to watch her. So all I really know right now is that it is not in the normal range, but it also does not appear to be life threatening. I will have to go with her for the next visit so I can listen.
So at this point I really know nothing, but I am having to peel my Mom off the ceiling.

Good luck to your mom. I really hope their dog is okay.
I noticed the local premier specialty pet store has become very busy. She carries all the extreme premium grade stuff and has been struggling. People are flocking in and buying now.

At this point with Jewel, I am thinking they walk 3 to 5 miles per day, she was only getting 1/2 of the recomended amount of food, she was also eating fresh fruit and Veges and treats and table leftovers. I did notice her coat was dull and her eyes blood shot/cloudy, she has always had a shiny coat like an oil slick and very clear eyes. Since the change in dog food, her coat is coming back back and eyes have cleared. So even if there is an issue, food related or not, We would be catching it early. I just wish I understood the long term effects.
