You have got to be kidding, "melamine though it's apparently used as a fertilizer in Asia", This has to be a joke. How much food are we outsourcing or products that make our food?? When this dies down, is it going to be business as usual?

We are outsourcing much more then most people realize. The meat packers now have USDA approval to ship fresh chicken to China for processing for the US market. Much of the seafood sold today is farm raised in China, seafood is actually COOL identified, you'll be surprised when you start looking.

animules, since I am only begining to look at all of this, can you please explain, "COOL" identified?

Has anyone changed what they are feeding due to this scare? Some I know have switched to Innova EVO and other commercial foods that are wheat/grain free.

by 1doggie2 on 31 March 2007 - 16:03

I know I have, commerical food no wheat no corn. I have a friend that purchased food from Trader Joes, his rescue GSD went into kidney failure. They caught it in time. She is now on a home cooked diet and he has to now be careful of what he gives her because of her week kidneys. He got the receipe from K-9 trainer on the force. She is now doing great.

I switched from Nutro Naturals for my pup, to Solid Gold Wolf Pup. My adult rescue dogs are still on Diamond. I wanted to feed Evo but I will have to special order the large breed puppy. No one here carries it. It sure did make me search websites and read all about dog food and what is in it. I spent one solid day just going from dog food site to dog food site and calling my local distributors. I'll see how my boy does on this bag of Wolf pup before I decide to get the Evo shipped in. I like the fact that Solid Gold is made right here in CA. The foil bag is neat and they suck all the air out of it before sealing, to keep it fresh.

I'd like to feed EVO also, but have to drive 50 miles to find a dealer and they have to special order the large bags, takes 10 day to 2 weeks. I still have a little of the RC left, no wheat and have been mixing it with one of Pitcarin's homemade diets. I've also been looking at the Dick van Patten duck and potatoe. Anyone feed that? I guess I may have to bite the bullet and keep making food or order the EVO in advance. I'd like to find a food that I don't have to search around for since we are on the road a lot in the summer and will soon be fulltime RV'ers. I don't want to have to scour all the feed stores for dog food.

I've been checking this out and remembered it was recommended by newspaper vet columnist Dr. Fox. While the good thing is they pay for shipping, seems a bit pricey, (no bulk size bags?), but probably is still cheaper than the butcher, and they claim its high protein means your dog needs to eat 25% less than most other foods. Thinking of trying it for my pup. http://www.flintriver.com/ Just changed to Canidae recently due to how everyone spoke so well of it on this board. My DH threw out our last bag of Nutro, said he wasn't going to take any chances.

Blitzen I fed DVP last bag of puppy food, it was mixed with the Nutro and poops were very good. I was just about out of food anyway and needed to make a decision on where to go for pup food. If you like the EVO buy it from your 50 mile away dealer. Just pick up 3 or 4 bags and that should get you through summer ok. Thats what I do for my adult dogs. For 3 dogs, I get 4 44lb bags and it lasts 3 months or so.
