I have my GSD14 month female on Taste Of The Wild  Bison and Venison formula. She looks great. They just came out with a lamb formula with a 7% less protein. Which formuls would be better for her?

I have heard people say that TOTW had high protien levels. Maybe thats why they made a new formula with less protein.

I use TOTW - Duck, Bison and Lamb, and Nature's Domain - turkey and my dogs are healthy and happy.

I like the lamb formula better.  For me, I'm not too concerned about protein levels.  I would be more concerned about the fat and calcium to phosphorus ratio.  I like to see the fat level at 15%.  I think high fat levels are more of a contributor to growth problems than protein.  The cal/phos ratio should be at 1.2 to 1.  with calcium being no more than 1.5%.  If the cal/phos ratios are off it can cause bone growth issues as well.  Personally, I mix 1/4 bison and venison ( for a different flavor) with 3/4 lamb and my 3 mo old pup is doing great on it.  The TOTW lamb formula has lower fat and calcium to phosphorus ratio is better.  Protein level is good at 25%.  Orijen which is considered the best food by a lot of folks has much higher protein levels - large puppy formula has 38% protein, 16% fat, calcium/phos levels at 1.5/1.2 min.  orijen adult dog formula is similar.

I tried the lamb, didn't like it. They lost weight and coats weren't as nice. My oldest gets a little itchy on the bison, I've had my best results with duck and fish TOTW.

I use the lamb with my male and he does very well on it. He doesnt do good with anything fish....whether it be fish oil or fish meal. The TOTW lamb doesnt have either. I am very happy with it and will not change.

SITASMOM.

Perhaps that was more talking about when they had a problem where they say too much protein was put in and it was recalled that you are talking about?

My dogs were eating it at the time of the problem and they told me " an alternative protein source got into the batch" they never offered to even replace the bag that made them ill and were not very helpful or worried about my dogs when they were all throwing up and ill. I will never feed their products again.

When was this recall? If you would like to PM me that is fine too.

I rotate the TOTW formulas, switchng about every 4 mos., have done for about a year and a half. Right now I have them on the Lamb recipe. My dogs look AWESOME... stools are firm, super coats, (they look like they're wet :-) fresh breath, excellent energy levels, and I only need to feed 2-3 cups a day, with moderate excercise,  to keep them in top, thrifty condtion.

Their hair is in such good condtion that dirt will NOT stick to them, even when they romp in the mud during a storm.

The east coast was hit by bad batch about a year and a half to 2 years ago maybe a little longer. I was insulted by their lack of concern at my three ill dogs. I was also put off by the multiple excuses and that they gave that were vague and they refused to answer me when I asked what the alternative protein source was then others who has enquired started getting the answer that too much protein source had been added to the batch.
