Best flea/tick prevention? - Page 1

Hey guys, just curious what has worked best for you? In the past I never had success with front line , but has anyone used Advantix 2? What about Trifexis?

I use nexgard. In 2 years I have only seen 1 tick on my dog. Because the dog live indoors but go outdoors everyday, we check her everyday.

Don't use trifexis. I would rather not get into it in the main forum here, but I have had a bad experience with it that resulted in loss of life.

Comfortis is good. The combo in Triflexis has resulted in many canine deaths.

Comfortis is Spinosad .. a half rate ( 1/2 of the recommended dosage ) lasts for three weeks. Best to buy the full dosage rate for your dog's weight and split the tablets in half and give every three weeks. The dosage spike is reduced by 1/2 and the product lasts 50% longer per dollar spent ( two months of tablets lasts 3 months ). The idea of monthly dosing is all marketing BS. Spinosad ( the ai in Comfortis ) is excellent on fleas and little else however. A synthetic pyrethroid or another topical tick spot on product to go with oral spinosad will cover fleas and ticks in combination or rotation with Comfortis.  The oral tick products are not safe for all dogs especially older and weaker ones of any age ( puppies ).  There are some who like botanicals and essential oils for ticks as well .. I have not tried them yet.  I use red cedar bedding in the kennels year round and that seems to discourage all pests .. not sure what it is doing to my dogs however.

Sentinel is good! The longer a preventive has been around, the better. Sentinel is very safe.

Please check out cedarcide.com though! They have amazing products that can be used for dogs and on yourself as bug repellant. They use natural cedar oil, which repels all sorts of bugs including fleas and ticks. The cedar will shut down the bugs' respiratory systems so they like to stay away from it instinctively. Because it is natural, it is not harmful for your skin and actually adds a great shine to your dog's coat. I use it (as well as the trainer I work with, who has used CedarCide's products for years) every time I go out to train. It works wonders and smells great too! I use the Best Yet formula for inside the house and after grooming, and the TickShield formula for outside use/training.

I use sentinel spectrum together with Nexgard. Never had a problem
and Im out door everyday in Park or Forest. In two years I have only seen a 1 tick on my dog, whom I check everyday because she lives indoors.
