Any suggestions as to how to discourage my GSD from digging holes in the backyard while outside alone?

Put his poop in it and then cover it up. After a couple times of finding this buried treasure he'll stop. My trainer recommended this and it worked.

Thank you. I'll try that.

Circuited- The best thing we've ever done is lay down chain link fencing where the lawn is. You cut the lawn low place the wire down and clip it together for continuous roll. Water and feed the lawn. Don't mow until the lawn is 4 or more inches above the chain link. Moe and you are done. Dogs can't dig and you can still mow your yard. Keeps you from being frustrated and the dog just digs a bit and gives up. Has worked wonders. Poop in holes never helped us. Birdy...

Never heard that one Birdy, sounds like it should work though.

When Morgan was young and wanted to dig I took her to a spot with tree roots or something to dig up (she didn't care) I made a command out of it and rewarded her for the action. It stopped the random digging and is still one her favorite commands. Lorri

Birdy, great suggestion. We may give that a try when we reclaim our yard. :)

Great suggestion birdy. I put in a sand box in an out of the way corner of the yard. She loves to dig in there as it is softer than the yard and it solved the problem.
