Savana Fire, I'm usually just a lurker here, but wanted to help you out here. I'm sorry you are having to deal with PF's. First, I don't think there is any PROVEN treatments, but some things work for some dogs. I treated my 11 year old male GSD for 1.5 years with just diaper rash cream and antibiotics. I didn't want to go the surgery route (removing anal glands) because he had already gone through so much (torsion, 2 knee surgeries and seizures) to name a few!! Also some people use Cyclosporine/Ketoconazole combo with great success. My best advice is to go to the Yahoo list. I learned way more from them, than from my Vet!! Very few vets have a lot of knowledge of PF's. The address for the PF site is:
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/PF-L/
I strongly urge you to join this group. They are a wonderful bunch of people!!
Good Luck!

Savanna not sure you could call this a proven treatment but my female got diagnosed at 10 years of age. She was having trouble defecating, alot of starining and just small or liquid like results. My vet did not have anything to do... then one night called and said a =n associate had tried Prednisone on a dog with great results. We put my girl on a high dose to surpress the immune system. I was not able to tolerate the water drinking and excessive urinating (sometimes right in front of me in the house) so I began to lower her dose. She is still on 5 mg a day for most of the original 2 years and has been very good. I don't know if this is a good route for a young dog but for my girl it has been a Godsend...
