Hey Guys/Gals, I have a friend that bought a dog back in 2001. He was washed from the police dept. He is a really great dog and we want to see what is in his backround. NO we are not planning on breeding him - he is nuetered. So when they told me that he was imported from over seas I asked for the tatoo numbers (we would use papers but the dept did not release them). Funny thing is he has no Tatoo! I thought they all had to have tatoos before they left the breeders? Am I wrong on that? Please help and Thanks EK

I just added a K9 Tattoo Registry on the net just because... http://ktr.messageforums.net/portal.php I wouldn't say Tattoo's are mandatory from the breeder.. I'd rather see breeder micro-chips in all honesty. I think Tattoo's should be mandatory for the Trainer. Someone to fall back on incase of a Civil Case and the dog needs a defender.

Tattoo is mandatory if the dog was SV or FCI bred. No tattoo indicates this was not a dog that was SV bred, he probably came from an unregistered litter. He may have come from a country that allows chipping for IDing the pup. BabyEagle, right now there is no standard chip that is being used worldwide. So a chip implanted in Europe most likely cannot be read here, unless the US vet has an ISO certified chip reader. The ISO chip is standard within the European Union to ensure the chips can be read by all chip readers used there. US chips cannot be read in Europe for the most part either unless it is an ISO chip, which most US chips are not. So chipping is not the answer at this point. In the US the ISO chip is available but at a considerably higher cost, so it is not used much.

Question...How many different chips are there? When Iw as looking I thought 3 her in the US and that is why I do not put too much stock in them. Someday if a universal chip or scanner that could read all is made, I would go with that.

There is a possibity that the dog was tattooed but it sometimes happens that the tattoo disappears or is difficult to find and read if it wasn¿t done properly. The dogs are tattooed either in the ear or inner thigh and in this case if hair grows over the tattoo it may be the problem why you can¿t find it.

Hi there, DH is right - tatoo is mandatory if you breed under SV rules. With the chip, i heared that it will also become mandatory for GSD's, some word was spread as start in 2008.... but i have no conformation on that. What i can say is that some Citys here in Germany made some Cityordinance where you have to chip the dog, regardles if it is tatooed or not. Cologne for instance is one. That a dog is tatooed on the inner tight is something new to me, i am used to the right ear. Regards Ulli

Hello my email is ekshepherds@aol.com Also there is no fading in the ear. There is nothing not a drop of ink in either ear or thigh. I always thought that anything imported was to be Tatooed. I was hoping to see what lines he had. But the only thing they have on him is a Rabbies shot. Talk about finding a needle in a hay stack :) When I lived in Kaiserslautern GE the cat that I adopted was micro chipped. I loved their policies over there. If you wanted a cat you paid 45.00 for a everyday cat. IF you could not keep it you paid 45.00 to return it. I was told if they found the cat as a stay it was a steep fee to pay. Needles to say there were no stays running around due to everyone was registered with the chip. Boy, I miss Germany

Could be a dog from the Netherlands. Here the microchip is mandatory and tattooing is optional since several years. Although a lot of GSD breeders still tattoo the pups because of Germany, also a lot are not.
