Hi all, just wondering what are the differences between a Personal Protection dog or a Schutzhund dog
by Mosemancr on 20 March 2007 - 00:03
I would expect Personal Protection to be more along the lines of Ring Sport. This is just a guess.

Schutzhund is a sport with three events: Tracking,Obedience and Protection.
Personel Protection dog is usually just trained with bitework and some obedience.

IMO in Schutzhund the dog most of the time is playing a game in the bitework. This depends on the training and agitator as when (if) stress is added it can raise the dogs defensive drive. A PP dog is being taught to be civil (will bite w/o a sleeve present) and once they go down this road may not be your family pet any longer.

In short, Schutzhund is a scored sport and personal protection is the "real thing" that but a few dogs can successfully do and remain relatively stable. Key word-"relatively".

As usual Bob-O has given the essence of the difference. To expand ond the issue I would just like to add this. Before getting a PP dog one should know that one is getting a "package" and should be able to handle it.

Thanks to you all for your responses.Yes i am aware that schutzhund has 3 phases as i have been involved for 2 years-(started with a puppy and wasted even more time with another young dog which had many health and temperment issues)I have heard so many different things about PP that i was just wondering what qualifies a dog to be considered good for PP.You know when you read some ads and they say,PP dog or dual purpose etc.

True PP dogs are born with it not only trained. like a boxer or mma fighter

More times than not, the add is a crok if it says PP dog. There are few people who have the ability to train a PP dog in the true sense.
Of course my rescue dogs are my PP companions and have been taught nothing. Would I market them as PP dogs for someone looking to buy? Not in a million, unless I wanted to be laughed out of town. Some people will say any big dog trained in OB is a protection animal. Chances are it's going to detour a criminal just about as well as an actual PP dog. The only time the PP dogs ability comes in, is if a person crosses that line, ignores the dog and the dog has to act on that. That doesn't happen very often and if it does, your being attacked by a drugged out person or one bold enough to kill your dog before moving on to you next. The dog will delay your attack so you can run, call 911 or find help.
I would like to know statistic of attackers that will go all out on a dog that fights back or just stop and run and also attacks that never happened just because of a dogs presence. Would be intresting...
I bet it is a very small % of people who will attack in the presence of a large breed and even smaller would stay and fight the dog to get to you.

Life with a REAL PP dog.
NEVER, go thru any door without announcing who you are, this includes the bathroom door. Or you will be missing part of your throat.
Do not give treats, he will not take them.
Kids can not ruff house even with him behind a closed door, he will go thru it.
He knows your neighbors, and their routine, god forbid they have friends over, He is on alert.
If your Mom and Dad have a fight, He will immediately take sides and backs your Dad into the shower and makes him stay there until your Mom cools off.
You can not play with him physically, because if you make a mistake and accidentally take him off his feet, he will forget who you are and act accordingly.
Anyone coming over to the home has to be properly introduced to him. Just because you have told him It is a friend, does not mean he is going to relax, he will just allow them in.
You will have to drive 50 miles to get a vet to accept him, and bring him in the back door, muzzled.
He never forgets grudges but will bide his time until he can see his chance, because on his walk you did not let him tear up the neighbors lose dog who was looking to pick a fight.
Never forget and let a workman in with anything in his hands, he will be missing them, unless you have properly given instruction to the dog first.
If someone is asleep in their room, do not even think about going in there, unless you have told him 1st.
Do not forget your code words, because if you do, He is not doing what youre asking of him.
Do not ever think he is asleep and you can cheat just a little.
There are no hugs and kisses; he does not understand this type of affection
There are no 2nd chances, or oops, when living with a PP because their reaction time is so fast, by the time you realized your mistake, IT IS OVER.
