Hey all, in my quest to learn more...
I was offered a pup that has an umbilical hernia, breeder said vet stated it was "ok". This is still a pup that is $1500. I passed on this pup, but was curious about hernias in general-do you need to fix them? How often do they occur and how much can you expect to spend? Thought this would be a good topic for more new folks like me.

I`d like to know others experience too - although I have had lots of pups over the years with these little umbilical hernias. I have NEVER had one that has been a problem and have NEVER had one operated on. I have heard 2 trains of thought - one that the bitch is clumsy when whelping with the biting of the umbilical cord, and the other train of thought that it is hereditory. I would go with the hereditory thought at present, as I seem to have had quite a lot of them (over thirty years mind). However, as stated, never caused a problem, never got really big, and never needed operating on. Over to others... Mo Lakin Mascani

My vet charged me just an extra $30 to fix a hernia when I had a dog in for hip prelims. According to my vet not genetic but is caused by the bitch pulling to roughly. I've heard different things from different vets though.
