Do you have a favorite clipper you like to use? Please share why, and where to purchase. My current one had a fancy electronic quick finder that has self destructed. I like the scissors type over the quillotine style myself, but my very favorite one was lost or left behind somewhere and I miss its feel. Any lack of confidence in my tool does not translate well for the whole operation of toe clipping for all concerned!

I was never a fan of the toe nail clippers and finially someone turned me on to using a dremel instead. I absolutely love the Dremel, super fast and clean plus if i do get into the quick, it generally cauterizes it for me :)

I love the Dremel as well. And no, the "Pedi-Paws" type knock-offs do NOT work as well. No power, take forever, torment the dog a lot longer. Dremel with the right head works awesome, you can round them, and they never bleed, as Cutaway said.

Having said that, I bring these to the spa for bath time and cut them while they're soft: http://www.amazon.com/Millers-Forge-Nail-Clip-Large/dp/B004QJYZ52/ref=pd_sim_199_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=411v3h-lTWL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=120CWCDDSY2HP3KXAWT2

Thanks Jen, I only recently saw a PediPaws ad and was
tempted / wondering whether they were as good as Dremel
(which I've heard recommended many times). Obviously
not - forewarned is forearmed !

I too have relied in the past on concrete; with a parrot-bill
style clippers in reserve. But if I change breeds with the
next dog, it might be necessary to get the Dremel ...

I like the scissor type clippers not the old roscos (guillotine)
Miller's Forge scissor type are the most comfortable, don't pinch your hand like some of the poorly build cheaper ones.

The large orange one are great and could damn near cut a framing nail in half, or doberman nails. Which are just as hard.
After 10 years in the grooming business i still have my first pair of miller's forge clippers, all the other types i have tried have either gone dull or broken.
I also dremel but i clip first and dermel to finish. Because some big thick long nails could take a long time to grind and the grinder does get HOT on the nail.
Better to remove the excess and clean it up with the grinder.

Also if you dremel beware of hair, your's the dogs, any hair as the get wound up on the grinder and ripped out bad.

I am with Yogi - although I lived in the nowhere with my last dog ( almost no concrete ) - I never had the need to cut the toenails off. Is it possible there are different lines of dogs with different kinds of toenails?
As a youngster I owned a Dalmatian, I walked this dog A LOT, but up to now this dog was the only one I had to cut the nails...

Susie,

Beau's nails almost never need a trimming, maybe the dewclaw now and then, so it won't catch up on something and tear. Mojo, as he is getting older and my college boy isn't taking him on the roads to pull him on his longboard, seems capable of growing long and tough nails! I am somewhat timid, and probably don't cut as much at a time as I could or should, having cut the quick in error before, and it pains me so. I have wondered if it was because Beau's nails are light vs. Mojo's dark ones. Who knows?

@ Everyone Else,

Thanks for all the responses! I never thought the dremel tool was so reasonably priced, and those orange Miller's Forge one's look just like the one's I used to have! Amazon is now offering me package deal, so I think I like the way Fry operates, and think that will work best for Mojo. Beau probably could just use a touch up with a dremel. If Mojo takes to the dremel that is.... he copies everything Mojo does!

If Beau see's I am trimming Mojo's toes, he presents himself next! Doesn't want to be left out! Too funny.
