I have been looking at different breeders' sites and am wondering how on earth homes can be found for the amount of puppies being produced in North America. Do you feel that people are breeding far too many dogs? Do you feel that the market will crash soon?

1,000%. it is crazy!
i have a very nice female, 16 mths old, no titles, but there are people who leave their phone #'s(in a pet store after seeing her photo) to see if i would wan't to breed to their male,110 lbs, no training, hips aren't certified etc...
all because they want a pup that looks like the sire.
once again, if and when i breed, it will be for the betterment of the breed.
getting back to too many gsd puppies it is crazy!Even the big breeders that are getting over 2,500 a pup should slow down a bit.
people aren't doing as well as they were finacally a few years ago.
so i agree too many dogs being bred for no purpose other then to make a buck! (or at least they think they will make a buck-HA doesn't happen)

I totally agree Harley and autobahn,
In North America... Dog breeding has gone crazy and it's all thanks to the organization called AKC. They don't care if neither parents are titled or health certification.. All they care about is to collect that check in the mail and to give the breeder a sheet of paper with a good design stating that these puppies are registrable and are eligible to receive a pedigree including registration.

i hope for you that the market will crash soon , its the world of the Internet , everywhere you can buy a puppie even its shit,people.. they buy, look what is adding here on the board, bad parents,or lines with no kor und Leistungszucht, from countrys where years ago only the shit from Germany was imported, they try now sell to the world.and thats why no country will ever reach the homeland quality, the serious breeders will have to wait some time

I agree that there are alot of people breeding to make a fast buck. But there are also alot of great RESPONSIBLE breeders who do it for a living. They don't "make a buck", they pay their mortgages, put food on the table, clothe their children and put them through school. This is their income.

breeders who breed for living are the worst , leave the race !! GSD breed is a hobby !!!

policemom,
I don't understand your posts.. you agreed that theirs a lot of people breeding to make a fast buck, however you are also putting them under "responsible breeders" by adding in "they pay their mortgages, put food on the table, clothe their children and put them through school. This is their income." Maybe I'm misunderstanding your post but this clearly views these breeders backyard breeders and should NEVER be labeled under responsible breeders, not by a long shot.
Responsible breeders do not depend on puppy money to put their kids in colleges, or pay off their house and etc. Responsible breeders will use the left over money to enter their dogs into shows/trials to improve their breeding dogs.

People who breed dogs for a living are generally not thought of as being great RESPONSIBLE breeders, policemom. They are mostly thought of as puppymills. There are many other ways to make money that does not involve breeding dogs. To earn enough to make a decent living selling dogs, one would need to breed a lot of litters every year which is not in the best interests of the breed or the dog world in general.
My first inpulse is to try to convince you why you are so very wrong in thinking it's all well and good to make a living breeding dogs. On second thought I doubt you'd get it anyway so I'm not going to waste my time or breath and then end up being the bad guy once again. I doubt many on this board are going to agree with you on breeding dogs for a living, so they can continue this discussion if they want.

"breeders who breed for living are the worst , leave the race !! GSD breed is a hobby !!!"
Before making such blanket allegations, stop for a minute and think where the breed would be today if it weren't for outstanding kennels like vom Kirschental, von der Pelztierfarm, von Karthago, vom Busecker Schloss and vom Wildsteiger Land, to name a few.
All of these kennels produce or produced hundreds of dogs registered on this database alone, and presumably they make or made some money doing so. Yet they all tremendously advanced the breed and you can't find a GSD today from either working or show lines whose ancestors don't go back to one or more of those kennels.
There's a huge difference between a Karl Fueller and an Andrew Hunte, and it's ridiculous to imply that the former is anything like the latter.

by harley on 14 March 2007 - 14:03
p59 you're right but most kennels today, don't produce what the old kennels did.and never will
people are out to make a buck and breed buffy to bruno because they have AKC papers.
(yes, there are a few still great kennels producing large amounts of pups, and that "i think" is there business)Jabina comes to mind,so does Hildernisse.
