We've had good luck with Blue Buffalo brand foods. We did have our dogs on Royal Canin, but the food has gotten too expensive; over $50 a bag. Even the Blue food went up $5 over what it was, but it still comes out cheaper and the ingredients are great. Just picked up a bag of Petsmart's own brand, called Authority Harvest Baked, which also has a good ingredient list and good reviews online. Hoping this works as it still isn't cheap, $37 for a 35 pound bag, but the best deal for the ingredients. Since we have a lot of shepherd mouths to feed, the credit card can really start smoking! We also supplement with "real" foods like yogurt, cottage cheese, and various meats. Depends on what's on sale and what our dogs end up liking best.
It's amazing because I never read ingredients real closely until my male had skin issues and allergies (this was about 10 years ago) and I really got serious about ingredients. You really have to do your work because even vets will steer you toward food that's crap; I remember spending $50 on a fish formula "allergy" food at the vet that was preserved with Ethoxyquin and ended up throwing it out.
I'd like to be able to buy in bulk or get some type of discount on food, but so far haven't been able to find any leads. Some of these other brands that have been mentioned sound interesting, but I've never seen them in my local area. The feed stores close by only sell foods like Purina, so I'm limited to the brands sold at Petsmart and Petco.
