I have a 19 mth male GSD. I have been feeding him Blackwood 1000 kibble which I obtained from my breeder. My dog has nice coat and good appetite. Recently, my breeder discontinued using Blackwood kibble, reason being, her bitches are not producing sufficient milk from the kibble fed to them.
I have decided not to follow him (he has since switched to Pro Pac kibble). I now using Royal Canin Maxi mixed with Blackwood 2000 to feed my dog. The reason for the mix is, Royal Canin produces some soft stool. Both Royal Canin & Blackwood have a 26% protein content. My question,is it alright to mix two different brand of kibble?

Jovi,
Well what is right for you or I might not be for someone else, It's really a matter of choice and of course you have the freedom of that.
I mix 3 sometimes 4 brands of kibble to get the desired blend I wish for.
Hope that helps some.
I think your fine to do so, but would be prudent to say check with your vet, see what they think.

it's ok to mix them while you are switching over. I feed Royal Canin 24 German Shepherd formula. Mine had soft stools in the beginning but are fine now. 26% is too high.IMO.

If your friend was using Blackwood 1000 for the pregnant bitches I could see the problem since the protien is not sufficient for pregnant females. I just got off of two litters one had 8 the other 7 and I feed them Blackwood 2000 before, during, and after on it and they produced enough milk through the whole deal. OF course I do supplement with meat, vitiams etc and everyone looked great.
I mix but I think you have to decide what is best for your dog considering where you live, exercise, temperature. We are just comming off of winter and I am still skiing with my dogs up to 20k 3 times a week and I have to mix and match the food to accomiadiate what they are doing vs their energy output.
