Saddle or Blanket - Page 1

Hi I'm considering a litter where sire is a red and black saddle back showline male. Dam is all black shepherd. We want a puppy that will have the same color and markings as the sire. From what I researched though is it true that the pups will probably turn out more blanket then saddle. As puppies both blanket and saddles look a like is there a way to tell?

The recessive gene that produces a solid black dog does not affect the strength of pigment. I have seen black produce dogs lacking pigment.

As far as blanket vs saddle, it's the same base genetic just varying strength of the black. If the sire is a saddle, your chances of getting that pattern is more likely. You're better off looking at their ancestry and what it has produced.

From what I have seen, dogs carrying the recessive black gene almost always have a stronger saddle (are closer to blanket back or are blanket) than dogs that don't.

Mom's parents is bi color and sabel but mom came out all black 

@gsdlover0507 - Is your reason for breeding these dogs the color of the coat??? Why breed either of the two dogs in question? What are the characteristics and traits you are trying to further in the GSD line?
