My family and a family of beagles ( 6 of them ) lived together on a few hundred acres when I was a child and a teenager. The beagles had their own world and their own lives. We fed them and cared for them (not very well) but they did their own thing. They roamed free all day and night and they suffered through the bitter winters and enjoyed the beautiful springs as did we running a commercial dairy farm. I enjoyed their company and they seemed to enjoy ours. Sometimes we went hunting together but it was always clear to me that the beagles were actually in charge of the hunt and we were just observers. We killed some rabbits for them and they put on the show.  We knew their voices on the hunt and their personalities. It was an honor to have known them.

An imageSame beagles this morning when video done. I love to listen and watch when my friend brings some of his pack to run them here on our place. He trials them and travels all over, does it for the love of running his dogs.

A lot of people say Beagles are the only breed not living within the "normal" pack order, but simply living together without the need to "upgrade" their position. I am not used to this breed, might this statement be true?
Beagles are the most common breed used by scientific laboratories, because they are that "easy" to handle. A result of the "lack" of pack order?

In relation to hunting, which ever dog picks up on the trail and sounds off in a convincing manner, the rest of the pack responds by joining up. In the trials, my friend says its which ever dog is out front and staying on the rabbit....the 'pack' in the trial are dogs not even familiar with each other. So cooperation is mandatory, no fighting ...it's been selected out of the breed.

Makes sense

In this pack of six, it is mixed intact males and females, zero squabbling as they all have the same goal...to track the rabbit..
He always brings mixed pack but not always the same dogs.

Do they catch the rabbits in the end ?
