While I wouldn't normally wish it on anybody,  can't help wondering what

would happen if some relative of these hoaxers got shot in a similar

massacre, and then they had to put up with the shit Mr Pozner has been

through ...

GSD Admin, you and I disagree on guns and gun ownership, that said, to characterize this sick person as a "dumb ass gun carrying delusional morons" is painting with a pretty broad brush.  Most law abiding citizens that exercise their 2nd amendment rights are the farthest thing from "dumb ass gun carrying delusional morons."  It is the very small portion of "dumb ass gun carrying delusional morons" that make it into the news. Heaven forbid the rest of the citizens that exercise their 2nd amendment rights are compassionate, intelligent, law abiding, empathetic, and caring people.  To say this massacre is a hoax is the same as all the other idiots that say massacres are hoaxes like the Holocaust, the Native American tragedy, etc.

Mindhunt,

I tried to change my post because I felt it was to strong unfortunately when I came back last night I had lost my internet connection. When I came on this afternoon I noticed members had already commented so I didn't want to change it.

This is a very large community of people Mindhunt. Larger than you think and their number 1 complaint is the government did this to come after guns, you can't and shouldn't dismiss it. According to them this was a hoax by the government, they own guns, their morons. Notice I didn't say ALL gun carrying...

I know most people who own guns are great people, I personally know some of them but I never talk gun rights with them, they know how I feel and I know how they feel so we don't discuss it.

The gun club needs to stop fighting against common sense things we can do -

Make sure if a person is on the do not fly list they also can't buy a gun

National background checks on ALL gun sales

Spend money on mental health - make sure if someone is being treated by mental health professionals the background checks are noted.

Over and over and over, I read and hear - oh that person who killed was mentally ill and most of the time they are. So, how do they have a gun????? Mentally ill and dangerous felons should never be allowed weapons. People being treated with certain anti-depressants should not own guns. The funny thing is I hear how mentally ill these people are but a lot of times they are found guilty not mentally insane. We need to change, we need to spend money taking care of these people and for the sake of the last victim we need to act.

GSD Admin, there are those who believe the government will come to get our guns.  I am currently living in Texas in the area called the "Buckle" of the bible-belt where they also carry a gun with the bible.  I hear my share of conspiracy theories from clients and from general population.  My mother and her family lived under Hitler and my grandparents remembered when he grabbed all their guns, it is subtle, insidious, and can happen.  As for the NRA, I really am not a fan after I found out they along with SCI (Safari Club International) fought the bill the the US Fish and Wildlife Services wanted to enact that would ban importation of trophies from hunts of endangered species like ivory from elephant hunts.  The bill also would have made hunting an endangered species prosecutable regardless of the "legality" (I use the term loosely) of the hunt in the country of the hunt like Africa.

I also hate the "they must have been mentally ill" crap as well.  As a doctoral intern in Clinical Psychology, I have worked with the gamut of mental illnesses.  Most are not dangerous.  The frightening thing is, most who commit such horrendous crimes knew exactly what they were doing and had full control of their faculties, I believe all have been found mentally competent to stand trial.  If one was truly "mentally ill" they would not be competent to stand trial.  Most, if not all were on psychotropic medication WITHOUT therapy with a competent skilled psychologist or had abruptly discontinued their medication (still without a psychologist for therapy).  Those that believe anyone with a diagnosed mental illness per the DSM-5 should not be allowed gun ownership do not really understand mental health concerns or the DSM-5.  It has diagnoses that fall under sexual dysfunction, phobias such as fear of snakes or spiders, eating disorders, adjustment disorders, bereavement, learning disorders, and so on.  Should someone with dyslexia not be allowed to own a gun or someone with a diagnosis of ADD?

I agree with you that we need to stop the knee jerk reactions and band-aid solutions.  Let's address the real underlying problems.  Let's help parents learn to be effective parents when they need help, let's make sure no child is EVER without nutritious food, let's make sure everyone has shelter and is healthy, let's teach common sense and critical thinking, good quality education, basic human rights and dignities, and so on.  How is a child supposed to learn empathy and respect of others if they never experience either from caregivers?  How is a child going to grow up to be a productive member of society when one or both parents are incarcerated or addicted?  How is a child going to learn the value of hard work and the rewards it brings if all they ever see is easy quick money from crime?  It does take a village to raise a child, to love them, teach them empathy, respect, self efficacy, and so on.

Mindhunt,

Tell that to my coworker whose son was on an anti-depressant and took his own life. Tell that to another coworker whose daughter killed herself after suffering mental health problems for years. That is at least 2 people I work with who had a loved ones life cut short because of mental illnesses.

Lets see if the abortion shooter is found guilty. How about the Colorado theather shooter, no mental illness. Are you sure?

GSD Admin - How absolutely tragic for your coworkers!  No parent should ever out live their children.  Cry Smile

Many anti-depressants exacerbate depression and can cause suicidality.  Unfortunately, if someone wants to take their own life, there is NOTHING you or anyone can do.  There is a huge difference between a cry for help and wanting to end the pain permanently.   I assess for suicidal/homicidal ideation as part of my daily therapy with my clients (suicidal clients have a plan, means, and a timetable to complete the act, at least the majority).  As psychologists, we learn to recognize the most dangerous time is when the medications first start working because it clears the thought process and they generally have the energy to complete the act.  I am not a big fan of medication, it is too often used as a permanent solution when it is just a temporary band-aid to help them control symptoms so they can participate actively in therapy.  This is not to say I know what happened with your coworkers' children, just sharing what I have been taught and have seen.

To claim someone is mentally ill because they commit a mass murder is to make light of the real tragedy of severe mental illness.  All the shooters knew exactly what they were doing, made plans, carried out the mass murders, and were found competent to stand trial.  The Colorado Theater shooter was found competent to stand trial by the way.  As for the PP shooter, he made a plan, carried it out, that is not mentally ill, that is a murderer, but we will see what the verdict is on his competence..

Mentally ill can still plan and carry out an attack and be mentally ill.

Here is a number for you to ponder - 554.

by joanro on 14 December 2015 - 16:12

Who, in their right mind, murders anyway ? Mentally ill does not necessarily imply crazy. Every person who commits murder is mentally ill.
