Looking for some opinions as to what might be considered a fair price for a Blk/Red female that was accidently spayed, she is HD-OFA-Good and comes from V and VA parents...She was born in Sept of 04 and was supposed to be bred but was somehow spayed while she was "fostered" out for a year...Her pedigree is very nice I was going to get a puppy from a planned breeding but when the dog didn't come into heat it was found to have been spayed... She is gorgeous and I do want her but the breeder is asking almost full price of $2500.00 which was what I would have paid for a puppy out of the "planned breeding"... She is in the database but at this time I would prefer to not get the breeder involved, no reason to cause bad blood between us Any and all opinions on this will help me to decide what I will do... Thanks, Rob (mrarebe@netscape.net

The whole story smells fishy to me... Anyways, I think this is a steep price for this female unless she is titled and can serve as a sport or protection dog.

"The whole story smells fishy to me... " That was my lunch :) A spayed female even with a good pedigree isn't worth much. I have an intact 19 month showline female with nice pedigree and couldn't give her away when I couldn't take care of her after my transplant surgery. Had one gentleman inquire about her but changed his mind when he found out he'd have to at least pay for shipping. Good luck!

Smells fishy to me too. She's a pet. She's worth whatever anyone would pay for a 2 year old pet. I'm thinking 1000 is a fair price. Even that depends on her personality.

If she has had quite a bit of basic training, even if with no titles, $2500 sounds extrememly reasonable to me. She's still a quality dog and unless you had planned to breed you are saving yourself money by not having to have her spayed yourself. You would have that much into her in no time with training, vet bills, carpet cleaning while housebreaking, and all the other little hidden costs it adds up to while one reaches that age.

One and all, The dog I'm talking about is or was a showline female with a terrific pedigree, she is sweet and will make a great companion dog...(I try not to use the word pet) As far as things sounding "fishy" what exactly do you mean by that...???You think I'm about to get ripped off...???I can tell you this, gorgeous or not I have no intention of paying full asking price for a spayed dog that can only be a companion dog, $1000.00 sounds about what I would pay for her considering she is what she is... You should know that I never had any itentions of breeding her anyway, she was always going to be a companion dog for us from the git go... I appreciate any and all thoughts on this as I could use the help, I am conflicted by this and need to make a decision in the near future... Thanks, Rob

1000$ sounds like a fair price to me for a well bred, 2 year old companion. Of course if the dog was trained or titled it would be different. Good luck!

Rob, Price is never a question if it's something you want. I think you are the one and only one that can justify paying that kind of money for a spayed pet. If you want my opinion go with your gut. If she's the one that you want make them an offer. Good Luck and let us know if you get her. Arrakis

You are willing to pay $2500 for a puppy that you will spay anyways... Since you are considering a dog that is already spayed that is a pretty safe assumption. Yet have questions about price of a dog that since it was a puppy has incurred additional cost for raising it, OFAing it, most likely putting some basic training into it. If you buy a puppy now, raise it, and then have it spayed it will have cost you a lot more by the time she is 2 1/2. Yes, you do not get the joys of puppyhood, but you also don't get the pains of puppyhood either. You may enjoy and even prefer the convenience of not having to raise a pup, and not having the extra cost of spaying, or the worry if the dog will grow up to be healthy (OFA), or the worry if she grows into a dog you can be proud of. All that has value. The question of price is not dependent on whether this female is spayed or not. If you are looking for a good quality companion dog and she fits the bill and is worth it to you then what does it matter what she may be worth to someone else. Same as buying a car. To some it looks like an old Beetle and not worth much. To the next person its extra special because if the special paint job, original engine, garage kept for 50 years, and so on. One person may say he would not put down more than 500 bucks for that old thing, while the next person will be happy he found such a gem for a mere 15grand, which will make the first person scratch their head. Or take a K9 for example. Most females that enter the K9 field get spayed because the handlers do not want to put up with heat cycles. Will a certified K9 bitch that is spayed be worth less than a comparable intact dog? Not to the handler who looks for a certain need that the dog has to fulfill. Many GSDs with flaws end up in K9 programs and become very high priced dogs. Floppy eared one nut wonders with a few missing teeth and an overbite. But worth 5 figures because they excell at their job and have great value. Or what about the dog that someone wants to have some extra training put on before they take delivery of the dog, and also want it fixed and properly healed up before it is sent out. Will they demand a refund after the dog has been fixed? Or are they entitled to one? Or is the dog suddenly worth less? A spayed female with the right criteria may be worth thousands to a service dog program. The examples are endless. The dog needs to be right for you. The price needs to be right for you. For no one else.
