These are the hips on a 5 month old male GSD. What do you think?

Looks like they tied his legs together...straining against the binding could cause the subluxation in a puppy...not any vet I would ever let touch a dog of mine.

The Chinese ambassador was visiting the French Prime Minister and was asked his opinion as to the influence of the French Revolution on World History and the current relationship between France and China. The Chinese Ambassador replied immediately and without hesitation " it's too soon to tell". I think that opinion also sums up your X-Rays.

I agree. If it was my puppy, I'd wait 6-8 months and re-xray. In the meantime, keep the dog in good condition with plenty of exercises without overworking the dog (don't use a treadmill or bike on concrete). Long walks/hikes are ideal as is swimming.

Well the pup is not showing any sings of pain or discomfort, but the vet says he needs bilateral hip surgery. I just don't see anything that alarming.

Yeah. NO WAY would I be doing that at this phase. You/the owner can always send the films to OFA for an outside evaluation.

Right hip is very lax.

Over time, it will degenerate.

It does look like the vet wrapped something around the legs..  I'd guess sedated the pup??

Muscle mass is nice, for now.

If this is a dog for breeding, consider PennHip to score laxity soon.

Visit a specialist/radiologist for more detailed opinion as well.

If a pet/companion, you now KNOW, and can set the pup up for success and not hide your head in the sand, pretending it will magically get "better".

Knees are too close together. Femurs should run parallel to spine.

What coach said, plus Tying the legs together at the stifle......that's dumb.

One can clearly see a cord around the thighs and they tied it in a granny knot...the least they could do is learn to tie a proper square not.
