What is a silent heat? What are some signs and symptoms of one? The reason I ask, is I have a 7 month old female who has not come into her first season yet but the year old mutt next door is always trying to breed her whenever I let them play. She is very flirtatious with him but she has no signs of being in season. Her vulva is not swollen, no blood, but there is a mucus type discharge? Anyone have any ideas

Please, please keep her AWAY from a male if you even slightly suspect this. Go to any pound or rescue and ask how many litters are born to eight or nine month old dams. Better yet, SPAY HER!

she may have a preheat. This shows a discharge, and you believe she is coming into heat. She isn't, it goes away. But then a month to six weeks later, she will have a real heat.

If your bitch has a silent heat, she must have a swelling of the vulva. 7 month is a rather young age
for the first heat! Nevertheless you should watch her carefully. There is a known disease process in juvenile bitches, called juvenile vaginitis that can lead to inflammation and possibly pyometra. You should check your bitch at your vet!
Do you have a large kennel? Sometimes this disease is prevalent in young bitches in larger kennels.
If so, we should discuss this in more detail!

Gimme10,
How is your bitch doing?

She might be coming into heat sometime soon. Usually male dogs will let you know before there is any signs or symptoms. My aunt has a female Fila Brasileiro(Brazilian Mastiff) and a male Chihuahua. Pretty funny to watch(Chihuaha humping a Mastiffs leg), but the Chihuahua and the neighbors GSD's will let her know a couple weeks in advance before she comes into heat. I think they have a scent in their urine or something like that.

Allaboutthedawgs,
My baby is doing great. She is growing so fast and becoming so beautiful. I'm always getting stopped by people asking me where I got her. She is very healthy her bout with demodectic mange is over it was just that little spot on her forepaw less than inch it is gone now and I didn't have to use any kind of medication. I think it was just due to stress. I tried keeping her around me more like at night instead of putting her in her area I let her sleep in my room. She does not like to be alone and also I giver her more exercise to stimulate her mind. She is great. You can view a recent pic of her under Viernheimi Fanta. I can't get her to do a proper stack but I do my best LOL.
Hewets,
As far as 7 mos being a young age for a female to come in heat, all of my females have always had their first heat at 6 mos. I thought that was normal and they cycled every 6 mos like clockwork. "Savvi" is the first female that I have owned who has not cycled at 6 or 7 mos.
Thanks everyone for all of your help
