Show/sport/breeding dog at pet price? - Page 1

Yet another ad where the buyer obviously wants a stud dog for the price of a pet. I mean, it is so obvious. She says she wants a pet to do agility with BUT the pup/ young dog she describes has to have an export pedigree, a VA-rated sire, and be a large, heavy male. Plus she says she has two females.

Does this not smell like "cheap, unregistered stud dog" to anyone else? Anyway, the ad lists no other requirements that would fit a potential agility dog.

Ads like this are offensive in numerous ways.

The buyer is attempting to manipulate potential sellers even when the subterfuge is patently obvious. Does she really think people are that stupid?

This buyer intends to create more poor quality puppies that will be sold to those who will not or cannot pay a fair price for a nice dog from a good breeder. These animals are destined to fill dog shelters and continue to give the breed a bad reputation.

Anyway, this ad is guranteed to attract scammers and other unscrupulous people.

As for me, I have to put up with people who approach me when I am out with my dog because they feel I simply cannot live without them telling me how bad my dog's hips are or that he is "limping", what a shame it is that the breed has so many health problems that they will never get one, or how they feel sorry for him because he looks so sad and old and unhealthy. I would like to bean the next person who brags about how out of control their dog is that they cannot have it on a leash in public after they make some offensive comment about my dog simply because he is calm and well-behaved.

I am not a breeder. I do not sell dogs. I might on a rare occasion refer people to a breeder or help rehome a dog. I just think it is tragic that people see CHD and DM as being normal to the breed. I also think it is an extremely poor reflection on a modern culture in which animals are still treated this shabbily, and the Walmart mentality extends to the value that is put on their lives.

And, you know, how stupid and lazy can someone be that they won't even go online to get more information in order to make their lies sound more convincing. I mean, they have access to the internet - yet they won't even make the effort to sound like they know what they are talking about.

It is hard to read such ads and not feel embarrassed that thse people quite literally think you are dumber than they are. Their stupidity is like blood in the water for the sharks who will defraud them. Good golly, people! It is one thing to be dumb. But with all the free resources readily available, it should be a crime to be this stupid and unmotivated.

If anyone has managed to read through this megillah, I guess my intention is to highlight a situation that will not get much better unless something changes. Some people will not be educated simply because their intentions are selfish and greedy to begin with.

However, when a personal choice affects the ability of of others to have the same choice, it is hard to ignore. So the government steps in and makes it more difficult for honest and responsible people to continue to enjoy certain freedoms.

(Onerous regulations for law-abiding dog breeders, breed bans, kill shelters, etc.)

And I just saw someone on Facebook with a page called I Hate Breeders! People are shamed for not getting a dog from a shelter but it makes no sense to make responsible dog breeding so cumbersome that it backfires and makes it easier to be a small volume puppy mill.

Well, I guess one way would be to offer the person s pup from the desired background, but in a spay-'s neuter contract and see if they are still interested...
But I do understand what you are saying... Responsible breeders get a bad rap in a lot of ways because of the irresponsible behavior of some puppy mills or backyard types who face no consequences whatsoever most of the time. There must be some sort of middle ground, but until the AKC decides it's worth the trouble to have regulations on breeding and registration, and not just trying to collect $$$ for every litter and pup registration possible, I don't see anything changing for the better.

I wouldn't worry much about it. VA rated sired puppies aren't cheap, even out of less than quality dams. A lot of people have certain expectations, might even be able to find that one breeder who does sell at a low enough price to meet their terms. When you put up an ad online, especially a free one, the worst thing that can happen is that you don't get any replies. There's a chance they get replies that tell them that they'll never find what they're looking for at the price they're hoping for and maybe that will teach them something. You also have to have some faith in breeders that they can see through people. Most aren't that dumb, especially those that are breeding to VA males. They're doing that for a reason and they can definitely tell when people are actually looking for something else.
