Western Rider

If it is hard and does not move ignore it.  It sounds like it is nothing more than cosmetic.  Like some humans have belly buttons that are outies

Well then, there you go! It was not a true hernia, her intestines are not strangling in that cherry-size bubble, it is closed, and so is the hernia case for this particular dog. Congratulations, you now officially have a dog with an outie belly-button! :-)
Reading the article that kimmelot posted (thank you for that, it was also interesting because it explained in my mind the juvenile heart murmur that occasionally shows up and then goes away by the time the puppy is 4-5 months old), it is not supposed to be hereditary. I must say, however, that we had a male many years ago with a hernia that closed and left him with a bit larger than cherry size bubble, that did produce his share of puppies with umbilical hernias. None were true hernias, all closed without surgery, but nevertheless, he did throw puppies with hernias. I stopped using him because of that (and the tendency for occasional soft ears that needed help going up in his puppies). I guess time will tell if you ever breed your female down the line. And even then, as was also mentioned by someone on this thread, some hernias are just the result of an over-zealous mama pulling too hard on the umbilical cord while getting it severed. So if your female ever did produce a puppy with a hernia, the question would be how many? Is it a very occasional puppy or is it a couple in every litter?
All best with her and glad it closed on its own!
