Should you send me photos of young german shepherd males please.
What is Pennhip ?
What is the difference between A1 and A2 ?

a2 is lower grade than a1, but its still a passing grade. Its also called fast normal. Pennhip gives grading on hips just like OFA does but they have a diff. system of grading.

Here's Information about PennHip http://info.antechimagingservices.com/pennhip/

a1

The femoral head and the acetabulum are congruent. The craniolateral acetabular rim appears sharp and slightly rounded. The joint space is narrow and even. The Norberg angle is about 105°. In excellent hip joints the craniolateral rim encircles the femoral head somewhat more in caudolateral direction.

a2

The femoral head and the acetabulum are slightly incongruent and the Norberg angle is about 105° or The femoral head and the acetabulum are congruent and the Norberg angle is less than 105°

This may also help you with comparison depending on where you're located. all the dogs with a1 & a2 pictured above have a Norberg angle of 105 and over as stated on their documents from the SV.

For the first xray shown does that mean the dog was also xrayed a second time looked at by OFA receiving a fair grade ? Makes me wonder if a2 rated dogs most frequently falls into a fair rating grade with OFA.

I was under the impression A2 = fair = passing and breedable. Remember, life is not fair...would be nice if life was fair, so a dog with 'fair' hips is better than less than fair :-)

Bundishep No the dog rated a2 was submitted to both at the same time. The other a2 is an entirely different dog. We need to remember that we're breeding dogs NOT hips, one single trait shouldn't be concentrated on so much that the others suffer. I would take an excellent dog any day with fair hips over an average dog with excellent hips! :-)
