" The symptoms -- fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and rash -- can mimic a lot of viruses, she said."

"If there is a suspicion that these symptoms could be related to a tick bite, the recommendation is to start doxycycline antibiotics immediately because time is of the essence," said Ashton."

A recent article about a woman who lost parts of all her limbs to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and a NC child who died in two and one half weeks above with quotes .. both were bitten in the Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma areas.  Doctors did not make an accurate diagnosis of RMSF until gangrene had set in which was too late and improper diagnosis of tick borne diseases is common.  The advice in the article was to treat for tick borne diseases as soon as you think it is possible that is the cause of the sickness in both humans and pets.  Doxycycline is available from several sources and at prices as cheap as 10 cents per 100 mg tablet or capsule.  I always keep doxycycline on hand for my dogs.  A link to the article about the RMSF victim in Oklahoma and also links to suppliers that I have used.  There is one Ebay supplier listed in Florida whom I have used and he has super fast 1st class post free shipping ( 2 days to NC ).  The overseas supplier is much less expensive but overseas shipping takes 2 weeks or more.  There are also suppliers on Amazon.  All of these doxycycline sellers are selling human grade doxycycline .. non-human grade doxycycline is not manufactured.

In some countries doxycycline is given as a disease preventative at rate of 1 x 100mg tablet or capsule per week when disease pressure is high and I believe some research work has been done using a single low dose (100 mg) treatment per week in areas of high tick borne diseases.  It is completely legal for anyone to buy and administer doxycyline to their dogs without a prescription or veterinarians supervision so long as legal dosages are administered according to the manufacturers label restriction.

Last month I was positive for Lyme AND Babesia :( I was sick as a dog, no pun intended. Since I can't take doxy, the first dr who said I had a viral infection in the ER which cost me 3200!! Put me on ceftin / 21 days..When I went for bloodwork , it came up positive for lyme and babesia..I ended up going to a specialist, who made alot of sense when she said "vets test our dogs yearly for tick disease as well as HW, I think dr's should include tick panels in their yearly bloodwork as well". So it's not only "lyme" that one should be tested for, and INSIST on it. The babesia I have is more like malaria, so I'm on 30 days of Mepron, (10 days costs 500$!, thank god my insurance approved it). Plus 30 days of azithromicin (sp). Then I go back..She told me since I have a rotten immune system to begin with, I can look forward to having "incidents" of it in the future but it's lucky it was caught sooner rather than later since it can cause all kinds of stuff, including death:(.. So if anyone is feeling "flu like" and don't think you have to have a bullseye rash either, cause I didn't!, insist on a tick panel..

The "People's Pharmacy" on NPR has an excellent program ( #1003) which discusses the latest on Lyme and other tick borne diseases including some new ones. Important was a discussion by an oncologist who had Lyme who works for Duke University. The hosts of the show in discussion remarked that the human Lyme disease vaccine is no longer used because it made some of those inoculated have the symptoms of Lyme due to an antigen and host response to the vaccine. The vaccine used in humans is the same as the canine vaccine so it is almost certain that some dogs given the Lyme vaccine are getting Lyme symptoms from the vaccine itself.

Dr. Spector was in peak physical condition when he began experiencing bizarre symptoms, including cardiac arrhythmias, joint pain, a period of brain fog (mental cloudiness), and more. His doctors attributed it to stress, but Spector (a physician-scientist himself) suspected he had a serious underlying medical condition, possibly Lyme disease, and fought within the medical system to find the cause, but years of inconclusive results, lack of a diagnosis and no treatment resulted in irreparable heart damage.

http://www.neilspectormd1.com/about.html

Dr. Spector had a heart transplant as a result of Lyme disease and the failure of medicine to properly diagnose the disease.  If a physician medical researcher nearly lost his life due to medical quackery and misdiagnosis then what chance do we normal citizens have and as relates to our dogs .. what chance do they have.  That is why treatment early and at the first sign of a possible tick borne disease is better than waiting for a physician or a veterinarian taking 4 years to diagnose this deadly disease.  Dr. Spector , a research physician and oncologist was told that Lyme disease did not exist in NC .. medical arrogance nearly cost him hid life.

Since I am disabled and on medicaid, with little income , and the denial of antibiotics is a regular occasion, I ask my doctor about this site and she approved me to order and keep in my cabinet along with use on my dog. you might want to check it out..of course , do not ask your DOCTOR or pharmachist as their income is in liability if they agree. Family has been using these antibiotics for years and even the pharmacist did tell them , same grade as what you are given by your approved Insurance need.

I have used Revival .. they are good but cost more and the shipping is sometimes higher than the sources I listed. The primary concern in treated many tick borne diseases is to treat early and many physicians and vets spend too much time on diagnosis with poor results since there are no accurate tests available to diagnose tick borne diseases.

Thanks for sharing this info Bubba, my theory is if you suspect tick borne disease, just treat and watch to see if symptoms get better, people and dogs... I had to of course, learn the hard way. Thx again for the reminder how awful these diseases are. Nan
