Any test can confirmed pregnant,in how many days?

by Sumo on 06 March 2007 - 12:03

Hello, You can either X-ray or do a sonography after 35 days of mating. You will get a confirmation about no.of puppies also.

Actually you can ultrasound after 28 days.. I wouldn't recommend xray until the very end, so much development is going on.. you can xray after 7 weeks when bones are calcified and count puppies.. a lot of people don't like xraying at all. but I do like to know what I'm looking at... Ultrasound has never been the easiest way to determine the number of pups but it does confirm pregnancy.. There used to be a blood test that also confimed pregnancy.. it worked just like the "snap" heartworm test.. it was quite accurate. We would do it first before the ultrasound ..... the test and the machine were new to my vets office at the time so it helped them as well.... Hope this helps

Howdy, hi Sumo, how are you ? Petoasis, conformation of pregnancy can be by ultrasound from 21st day on. This would be for me the way to do it. And yes you also could do x-rays, but i believe this can be only done later in pregnancy, as you want to see bones of the pups. I never do it by x-rays as i believe that to be a healthrisk, that is not nessery. Furthermore it is allways at 3 weeks pregnancy difficult to give a half way exact puppy count. I do annother ultrasound about 7 days before the whelping date, the count will be more accurate and you can see if the hearts are pumping, pretty neat ! If you then have an experienced Vet doing the ultrasound, he can even tell if the pups are developing the way they should. Hope this helps. Ulli Dresbach

An experienced vet can determine by palpation @ 2 weeks.

Denise, The blood test is still available. We did it on the last litter at about 32 days.

ultrasound with experienced repro vet can count puppies at 28-30 days and be very accurate, also check heartbeats. Also the blood test "relaxin" is supposed to be 96% reliable as early as 26 days, but won't give you a puppy count. Palpation is dangerous and though it might confirm pregnancy, won't count puppies either. X-ray counts puppies but is not as accurate as ultrasound (done with a good repro vet) and can't be done until the female is almost due. I use ultrasound with an excellent repro vet at 28-35 days and always get an accurate count, within 1 puppy. molly

eichenluft, with my A-litter i had a ultrasound done at 23days, Vet counted 8 Cell masses, man i was a happy camper ...... still waiting for 3 of them to arrive !! So what i do now, ultrasound at 23-25th day to confirm pregnancy, of course we will count, but i will not rely on it. Then around day 56-58 i will do annother one and that count i rely on. Still my Vet always says +/- 1, and he was right on. Regards Ulli

We do the test and the the xray right before whelp to confirm count and placement.
