What causes them? I understand that females and neutered males(?) get this swath of grey hairs around their shoulders. Is it undesirable in the females? Do all black/tan/red females have this? TIA

What do you think of it as actually being a remanant of the GSD wolf ancestry ? Maybe ??

Hi guys, The "bitch stripe" is very common and is almost a "characteristic" of showline bitches. Not all, but most develope it upon adolescence. Some males will develope it too, but rarely, and not nearly as many males get it as bitches do.As I said , it's most prevalent in W.G. showlines. It doesn't seem to be a fault with judges, even though most of these "stripes" are a very faded washed out color, some looking almost white.Comments on this, please.

Never heard of the "bitch stripe" before but I must have earned at least 3 or 4 of them by now :)

The "bitch stripe" is so common in the showlines that it is almost a surprise for a bitch to not have it. I have seen it often in my line, and as long as the sable is rich (with strong black tips) then it is not an issue as far as I am concerned. Bob-O

my male has silver tipping ticking, salt and pepper,"bitch stripe". It was quite predominant on his mother. I actually like it alot and think of it as a nice change from the (showline) predominantly black saddle. I have spent quite a bit of time in germany and I have seen it on gsd's there as well...primarily show breeds though and primarily females. Is it just a matter of appearance(or so called appearance standard? why do some people get so hung up on this?

Someone told me the "bitch stripe" is the one that goes down the shoulder. If this is right I'm confused because I see it on a lot of intact dogs, both male and female. If I am wrong about the bitch stripe being the one along the shoulder (down from the withers) could someone please give me a link that will show me what the bitch stripe looks like? Thanks in advance.

I forgot to mention that my male is intact and his "bitch stripe" started to appear at about 4 months.. I'll see if I can find a photo to send to you.

The "bitch stripe" is a mark similar to that of possessed by a skunk, i.e. it runs from the withers to the croup. The stripe that goes across, rather than with the shoulder centreline is also common when the "bitch stripe" is present. In litters where the "bitch stripe" appears in the females, it is not uncommon for the males to have a marking of similar colour, yet only across the withers. Just my observations, Bob-O

Thanks, I think I got it. Is it accurate to say the dog pictured here has the "bitch stripe"? http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/103783.html
