I have a friend who's looking at buying a dog that has this dog in its ancestry: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=485035-anka-vom-haus-hillsview

Does this look like a blue, or is it just a crappy faded picture? Also, anyone know anything good/bad about Hillsview Kennels?  You can PM me if you like!

Looks to me like a crappy photo, sun was hitting her at an odd angle, you can see it on the grass.

Is this the Hillsview Kennel that is located in Canada? If so, there are several Rip Off Reports online.

Yes, that's the one. I know there were problems with paperwork, but since the dog my friend is looking at is not directly from them, (and her paperwork is in order) my  main concerns would be health and temperament issues.

Hips and elbows done? I have some experience with this kennel and I wouldn't just walk away, I would run.

She has passed OFA but the 2 generations of dogs behind her aren't x-rayed, nor are they titled, with the exception of one dog.

The guy selling her says she's had 2 litters with him and has produced some great working and PP dogs. She's only 55 lbs herself, and is quite small, but he kept a male from her and he's 84 lbs!

The breeding behind the father looks just as good as the above dog: Karthago, Bungalow, Orry von Haus Antverpa, von Blitzaerd, plus lots of DDR when you go back far enough.

55# for a bitch is not 'quite small'...it's an excellent size for a female; ideally, I prefer to see bitches for whom 50-65# is an appropriate fit weight--remember, this breed wasn't developed to be a brick house, it's an all-around utility dog that should be agile & quick, lithe and light on it's feet so it can scale obstables or be easily boosted up over something that can't be safely scaled. Spare me the 70, 80, 100# female GSDs, please!

Badly lit photo, not a blue. Coat doesn't look like it was at its best condition when the pic was taken, either.

The breeder I got my two GSDs from used to own Anka's daughter, Sara; the breeder adored her and said she had a wonderful temperament, but Sara wasn't the best producer and was retired and placed with a friend of the breeder's, unfortunately Sara passed on that trait to her daughter who was unable to conceive, so the bloodline was lost from her breeding program, much to her clients' disappointment. Your friend might want to take this into consideration.

I don't believe Anka is a blue either; Sara was a solid jet black and produce very rich colored pups (who by the way, all had fantastic temperaments as well, many of them are working in SAR, AKC obedience and agility, medical assistance, etc). Hope this helps!

NM, Anka is in the background of a dog being considered for purchase.

Though to be fair, I personally wouldn't be averse to the purchase of an outstandingly healthy, intact female of that age who had successfully whelped previous litters easily and without complications with the intent to have her produce a single litter *for myself [meaning I would be keeping most if not all of the pups]*, if there was something really, really special or important about THAT particular female AND her lineage, spaying her afterward [or, if she didn't conceive when mated, as soon as that was evident] and then being her retirement home for the rest of her natural life.

There are precious few dogs that would--or should--meet that definition, however, and were there to be one, I would already know everything I needed to know about her and wouldn't be having a third party asking whether she was an off-color or if anyone knew about what was behind her. Wink Smile
