Be advised that Griffin Shepherd Kennels, operated by Augusto DeOliveira on a 98 acre property in Hanson, MA on which he is a tenant, was placed under quarantine on May 28, 2015 by the MA State Veterinarian's office as the result of confirmation of a parvo outbreak on the site, which has resulted in the death of at least one young dog so far. Calls to the Hanson Board of Health have confirmed that this quarantine is in effect, and there is to be no movement of dogs onto or off of the premises until further notice.

On May 26, 2015, DeOliveira posted that he was at the vet's with two of his female GSD pups, which are approximately 6 months of age, to be treated for what he claimed was 'heat exhaustion' from having been run too hard and long with him while he was trail riding; photos of the pups show them receiving fluids, and at one point he noted that they were "...on their second IV bag now"--which indicates that both animals required significant rehydration. No further updates were posted by him regarding the condition of the dogs, save for a brief claim that they were both back home and doing fine. It has been recently confirmed that one of these two females did subsequently die, contrary to his claim that they were both recovering well, and the MA State Vet placed a quarantine on the premises in Hanson, MA two days after those two pups were initially admitted for treatment.

In the meantime, DeOliveira traveled to Haymarket, VA last Friday to hold 'training classes' in the area, which included accompanying his clients and their dogs to various public places in that area, including local soccer fields, the Apple store, and a local restaurant, among other spots. Within the past two weeks, DeOliveira has also traveled to Providence, RI and Cape Cod, MA to hold training classes at undisclosed locations in those towns, potentially exposing other people's dogs to the illness.  Two weeks prior to the quarantine being placed at Griffin Shepherd Kennels, DeOliveira traveled to Spotsylvania, VA and Gaithersburg, MD for training classes as well.

Anyone in the Hanson/Cape Cod/Barnstable/Hyannis areas of MA, or in the vicinity of Providence, RI, Haymarket and Spotsylvania, VA and Gaithersburg, MD, who may have had contact with DeOliveira, his dogs, or dogs belonging to individuals who attended training sessions with him in those areas should be extremely vigilant in the observation of their dogs for any signs of illness, and seek veterinary care for them at the first indication of lethargy, loss of appetite or gastrointestinal distress.

I feel sick for those dogs😢 maybe now something will finally be done to shut him down

by SageDancer on 09 June 2015 - 01:06

Well considering he does NOT give vaccinations to his dogs, im not surprised this has happened. Im sure many more dogs of his will or have come down with this.. Sad really, but reality is, he needs to be shut down. And considering he has a litter on the ground, that he moved to someone eles house, which may be affected by this.. this is what happens when you care for your ego and power trip.. than for the dogs.

I'm afraid he's spreading the virus as much as his dogs could.  He drove his two parvo stricken dogs to the vet in his car, the same car he took to Virginia for training sessions, staying in someone's home, wearing the same shoes.  Vaccinated dogs can get this virus.  I can only hope his clients dogs are vaccinated and that the clients knew about the quarantine, I highly doubt this though.

I can tell you without question that at least some of the clients he was with last weekend were made aware of the situation once it was confirmed by the Hanson Board of Health--many people reached out to those individuals privately, or reached out to others whe knew those people personally, so they were not left in the dark. Whether those individuals choose to believe what the Board of Health has confirmed, however, is entirely up to them; were I one of them, I'd certainly be calling the Board of Health myself to get confirmation, but if someone is deluded sufficiently to think that this jerk knows the first thing about training and will pay to participate in a training session with him, they are deluded enough to take his word above everything else, even that of the Hanson authorities.

Thank you for the heads up, Hexe. I knew this guy was bad news. I just didn't realize HOW bad until your post caused me to check out some links about him, especially the FB page "Beware of Griffin Kennels"!  Sad Smile

I run a UK group on Facebook called Parvo Watch which reports areas where cases of Parvo have broken out, together with a Google Map of the hotspots.

There's lots of files and discussions about it, how to prevent it, how to treat it, protocol for vaccinations. I started it 3½ years ago and it now has nearly 4k members.

I wish the authorities in this country took the same approach as shown in MA - ban any movement of dogs where there has been Parvo. The UK is inundated with greedy little puppy farmers and BYB. There just doesn't seem a way to curtail it...

Why aren't they quarantining him from leaving and going to who knows where exposing other areas and many dogs to the virus?  This fool could be spreading it all over the eastern shore.

by hexe on 11 June 2015 - 03:06

Don't know if they have the authority to actual restrict him to the property. I have no doubts but that he will spread it everywhere he goes, because he can't even understand how the disease spreads, or how vaccination could have prevented this situation in his so-called 'kennel'. I hardly think he has a full grasp of the concept of bio-security measures.
