was wondering what is the difference between vom and von? And was wondering what this haus meant? thank you

Von i beileve means of, Vom i believe means From, and Haus Means House or maybe vice versa

It means the same thing, depends on the gender of the word following von, masculine is von dem, shortened vom, feminine is von der. Both mean from or of. Haus is house. Bea

Kmaot, I hate to put it this way, but "you just have to know" which gender a German word possesses. I spoke German for the first seventeen (17) years of my life, and even I cannot get it every time! It has been too long now. Bob-O

Here, let me complicate this even more :) If you have a kennel name made of a compound noun then the 'von' and 'vom' depend on the gender of the last word in the compound. For instance, say the kennel name is Blumenhof, which means Flower Yard. Blume is feminine, Hof is masculine. Hence, it would be 'von dem Blumenhof', or 'vom'. But if it were 'Blumenwiese' (flower meadow) you'd get 'von der Blumenwiese'. 'Von dem' has a short form, which is 'vom'. 'Von der' doesn't have a short form so you'd abbreviate to 'v.d.' The thing to do is just abbreviate the darn thing to 'v.' or 'v.d.' and you don't have to worry whether you got them right or not. Confused yet? You cannot go wrong by using 'v.'
