Dogs serving humans as protectors, medical alert dogs, and assistance dogs.

The coyotes were not after the injured human .. other carcasses so the coyotes attacking the live human was not going to happen but the dog did well and it made a better story saying that the dog fought off coyotes ( likely a pair ).
