Is there any cheaper way of getting metronidazole than from the vet? Trying to treat a mass infection of coccidia and possibly giardia as well.... :(  We started the pups on Albon, and the stools began to firm up, then got runny again, so are suspecting giardia as well, as that little beast is so good at hiding.)

No problem getting the Albon in large amounts for the coccidia, but not sure how to get the flagyl except through the vet$$$$....

Fish branded products are cheaper and are human grade .. usually with the same ISP markings and numbers as what is sold at the vet or the pharmacy.

Okay, did a search of the forums, and some posters are saying metronidazole isn't that great a treatment for giardia: panacur is better.

Stool tests were negative for everything but coccidia, which was found in the stools of both the adult GSDs and the pups.

Suggestions?

It could also be some other stomach crud which metronidazole would be effective for...

The adult dogs have been taking turns having diarrhea, then it goes away without treatment, or with a day's fasting followed by rice and pumpkin. Stool tests were all negative until the puppies got the runs.

Have your Vet order you a bottle of Ponazuril 90mg/ml Suspension
I got mine from Roadrunner Pharmacy
this is the greatest stuff for coccidia

NOT CHEAP but it works with just one dose, sometimes but rarely need a second dose

Wanted to ad that it is much better than Albon as it looks like Coccidia is becomeing resistant to it.

We got a jug of Albon from the feed store...FOUR other people are wanting it!! Must be that time of year!  What Smile The pups are already on sulfamexotrim tablets, so we don't want to change the medication part way through treatment.

Toltrazuril is much more effective, and a quicker treatment, than metronidazole for coccidia.

If you think it's giardia treat for *minimum* of 6 days with fenbendazole, 10 is better if it's been persistant.

Okay, we also have some tubes of Safe-guard horse wormer (fenbendazole 10%) so we're covered for giardia, and have talked to someone who's used to using this to get the proper dosage per dog.

What a nightmare this all has been.....  Sad Smile

Had a similar issue with Jagger as a young pup.  Did Albon for the coccidia and then fenbendazole as a follow up.  Safe Guard packaged for equines is far less expensive than Panacur packaged for dogs.
