Depends on your definition of "good temprement" (sic).

by vk4gsd on 10 April 2015 - 01:04

ie not insecure and guardy, a lot of dogs will not tolerate another dog hovering over them like that while they are eating i can't stand guardy behaviour in any pack of dogs.

it suggests insecurity imo.

oh please explain again what (sic) means i know it is some common literary device for something but can't remeber what it means??

He/she looks nervous and uncomfortable for sure. Tongue flicks and ears. just my opinion. also I would like to know what the relationship between the two dogs are.

I do not see a "secure" dog at all... in fact quite the opposite. The dog (GSD) is looking side to side, licking lips, ears off to the side, etc... all signs of a dog not comfortable with the situation he is in. Also when the GSD gets up and walks away the tail and head are down and he will not make eye contact or look at the other dog.. The other dog is the dominant one in this situation.

Now this in NO WAY is saying that the GSD is not a confident and secure dog in most situations. I am just commenting on what I saw in the short 56 second video.

She is definately trying to bully dominate him;   apart from the signs he

gives as spotted by others^^^, watch her concentration and the direction

of her eye-gaze.

But that's ok, gentlemen GSDs allow themselves to be henpecked by the

ladies !   Doesn't necessarily say much about his overall temperament.

[ sic, btw, means "that was how the dumb author spelled it, isn't my spelling mistake in

repeating it".]   I think Jen's having a go at your typos again. Tongue Smile

What I'd like to know is:  was Tsia  standing over him from the start, when there was

more than a few scraps of bone left ?   It was hardly worth his while to defend it by

the time your vid starts.  Bet he growled earlier, even if only  sotto voce.

no offence but i am not sure if i would ask you guys to decoy or select a dog for me, your ability at reading dogs is ..... interesting.

curious, do you think a dog that raises a paw is nervous, i hear that a lot on the internet.

licking lips in this context could not be you know licking lips after a meal??

the gyp is a rather submissive dog in relaation to the gsd, but is a horrible bully around other dogs.

she was born in my house when the gsd was about 2yo and has grown up beside him.

i will get some more vid of how they interact, you will prolly be shocked with more info. she is a real suck up around him thats why i thought the observations were interesting.

BTW Tsia is turning out to be my best hunting dog, super fast and aggresive, literally a bullet with teeth.

hund yes she was but the vid was kind of long and repetitive so i snipped it.

I agree with vk that the GSD is very relaxed and just licking his lips as he's finished  his meal, however, I don't think a dog that guards is necessarily insecure.  Sometimes another dog needs a sharp disciplinary action so he'll buzz off.

by Blitzen on 10 April 2015 - 12:04

And this is about what exactly? BTW how old is your GSD, vk? I thought you said he was less than a year old? If your female really wanted that bone, she'd have taken it from him and he'd have allowed her to.

by joanro on 10 April 2015 - 12:04

I haven't had time to watch the vid.
Just wanted to comment on your term for the female, 'gyp'. Haven't heard that used by a dog person since I moved out of Florida...made me feel at home, brought back a flood of good memories, kind of like a certain aroma can bring back deep memories that are pleasant ( Johnsons baby powder for example) Gyp is what I called female dogs till it became evident its a colloquialism specific to the people I associated with, and I got tired of explaining the meaning.
I love your hounds, BTW.
