The picture vanishes as soon as the thread starts to open, but this might be my computer...
A lot of problems lately.

susie, on the beta frontpage the interactive pedigree sometimes vanishes if I resize the window after loading the page.
changing window size can make things vanish and sometimes also comeback.

Lineage, I know it sounds silly to us, 'Open Air Bred', but think back on how things were in that time...there was no vaccine against distemper, and 'the fresh air' was believed to be more healthful for all creatures than being cooped up inside a building, unexposed to the stuff the world is made of which includes all manner of viruses, molds, bacteria and other microscopic life forms.  I suspect a lot of 'indoor kennels' were not too easy to keep clean and disinfected, either.

I like seeing ads for just plain old German Shepherds with no mention of working or show lines. Only "the best blood of the breed" and the mention of the top dogs of the time. Some domestic, some imported. What a crazy concept Tongue Smile.

Everyone, You will LOVE the prices...
$15 to $50 USD, These were just Shepherd or Police dog puppies,

you could get them from Americam or German Champions
and from registered or unregistered parents.
Hexe,
I have a copy of those first distemper vaccine ads somewhere :)

Above, only the Dam is registered...

Below some shepherd police dog puppies for sale

Also Open Air Bred.

Sometimes they name the parents along with registration numbers and birth dates.

What have we done wrong?

I love all your historical information, Lineage. Thank you for sharing.

Blitzen, If you look at all the threads defending/promoting "Lines" I think we might get an inkling of " where we went wrong".......dogs in general are probably more cosmetically pleasing today, but in general I still feel health, hardiness, and between the ears.....not so much. Just as isolated opinionRegular Smile
