On Friday, a spokesperson with the US Food & Drug Administration confirmed that there recently have been cases of kidney failure and glycosuria in dogs which were fed jerky-style pet treats which were manufactured in the US of meat sourced from US farms, with no indication of any link to ingredients used in processing or packaging that could be traced back to China at this time.
The take-away message here is to observe your pets daily, and take note of ANYTHING that seems to deviate from what has become their customary behaviors. This would include drinking more or less water; inexplicable weight loss or gain; change in appetite, bathroom habits, sleeping habits, stamina, attitude and activity level. If a change persists for more than a few days and you know of no plausiible reason for it, give serious consideration to having the pet checked by your vet. Better an unnecessary vet bill for nothing at all, or something minor, than to be faced with trying to treat advanced kidney failure and potentially being unsuccessful even with trying.

Why do people use jerky style pet treats instead of just using jerky?

I don't use Jerky at all, ever and primarily bake my own treats for the dogs because you just don't kow whats in it.

My dogs love Halo slices. All natural, vitamin C and anti-oxidants. Probably not the best for training as to many can give the runs.

The truely scary thing is much of the feed lot, factory farmed meat grown in this country isn't fit for dogs or people. Loaded with chemical inputs from before birth until after death it is no wonder that the cancer rate has gone up to 1 in every 2 people. (of course it's not only the meat)
And then they give the dogs the parts that are considered 'inedible' by humans, throw a few more chemicals in there for a better shelf life, color, flavor and whatnot and there you go. Deadly. And they get paid for it. Go figure.
