I just saw this new dog sport. It looks so awesome! My dog will absolutely LOVE this! Has anyone tried it yet? Are there classes or is it more of an instinct type test?
I want to give it a try this year along with Lure Coursing and nosework!! Should be a fun year year! We are going for a BH and CDX this summer as well!
Lastly, I was wondering if there was any interest from anyone in forming an IPO training group in the Metowest Massachusetts area? I hope this post stays here and doesn't get moved to the sport section mainly because I want this IPO club to be different.
I want this training group to welcome ALL german shepherd bloodlines, german shepherd mixed breeds, and any other breed or mixed dog. The only requirement is that the dog and handler want to have fun and explore IPO! My hope is to form a supportive training group where all training styles are respected; all handler goals are respected whether you just want to train and never trial, trial at club level, or compete more seriously. It would be perfect for people new to the sport or experienced handlers wanting a change of pace.
I would love to have an atmosphere of respect, class (watch language/family friendly), tolerance, compassion, and kindness.....
Any interest please PM me!
Thanks,
Sarah

It is my understanding that Barn Hunt is instinct based - at least in the beginning. Google is your friend! :)

Thanks, VK!
Dawulf- I wasn't sure if anyone had actually done it yet! I actually did more research and found clubs who do training workshops. How cool is this event? I think my Bitch will go nuts for this! She is my mole chaser in the fields!! hehe
PS- I don't think I have ever told you this over the years... but..I love your dogs!

Why don't you just join up with the training group your dog's breeder started? It's not that unreasonable a drive for IPO training. Most of my club members drive at least that far, several travel significantly further.

A couple personal reasons......

My competition dog will NOT be doing barn hunt despite me having multiple friends who run trials. Last thing I want is for him to start crittering on an IPO track, and "finding the rat" will be way more rewarding than tracking for useless articles!

LOL!!! Well, very good point but I think she should be able to distinguish. I just better proof really well!
I know GSDs that have lure course titles and still stay on track when a rabbit sprints in front of them!! I'll risk it!!
But, you may be right.....hmmmmm.....rat or article!! hehe

There is one of these in my area and I will check it out. I have a small female GSD that should be great at this or agility or flyball. I will go see the trial put on by one of the local AKC afiliates ( Durham Kennel Club ) which is very near me. Thanks for the post!!

Good luck!!! If you end up checking it out soon please post your thoughts!!
