Several incidences of K9 handlers doing a poor job of controlling or training their dogs. In the last few weeks a Police K9 got out ( supposedly ) of his enclosure in the Police car and mauled a 12 year old with no handler present. A second K9 attacked his handlers 4 year old son and chewed off a leg in the handlers back yard. Now a handler sends his dog into a hotel full of people and the dog chews up a young boy. Something is going wrong here with dog selection, dog, training, or dog handling .... or a combination of all three. A dog that attacks a 4 year old does not have good sense so how do these dogs get selected and trained as police dogs. Are the Police dogs attacking children just misfits that were trained or good dogs trained to be misfits by their handlers and trainers?

In London UK 5 people per week are being bitten by police dogs without cause.

I suspect the numbers of people bitten by out of control police dogs as a result of poor training or handling is much larger in the USA .. just kept secret but in the future when police dogs are all Beagle Hounds that may be the reason. The dogs must be selected, trained and handled properly. The misuse of force is a huge problem for the police and it will only get worse as camera phones and security cameras are catching both the criminals and the police in the act of breaking the law.

Why is this post in the CONFORMATION SECTION ?
Why didn't you suggest it is bad genetics (bad breeding) too. It isn't only lack of training and control. Those dogs are too agressive, not clear in the head and dangerous.

"......or good dogs trained to be misfits by their handlers and trainers?"

Maybe both
But I think we shouldn't rule out bad genetics, even in case of being mistrained, improper agression & misfiguring out true threat has a genetic background. A dog attacking a child without any reason is a dog that should not be utilized in service

Of course the news media always has to use photos of GSD's to represent those "killer police K-9's". Terrible publicity for the breed.

Sorry that I put the original thread under conformation .. should have been under main. Police dogs include several dog breeds and some mixed breeds such as those used in the KNPV. The question remains and that is what dog in his right mind attacks a 4 year old in his back yard?? Is deploying a K9 in a hotel full of people a good idea or was the dog on leash and bit the 10 year old due to poor handling?? I seriously doubt that police dogs biting the wrong target is anything new but the damages and reparations the police are going to be paying to victims will seriously damage the use of K9's if it continues. I saw a video in which a K9 officer put a dog through a window on a driver who was sitting motionless and doing nothing apparently just for his own amusement. The driver guilty or not did not deserve that and using the dog like that shows that for some having a hammer makes everything look like a nail. The solution is to take away the hammer from those who can't use it properly. I will be surprised if there is not a rush away from the biting breeds in police K9 service as the bean counters will get tired of paying for personal injury claims for dogs being used improperly. The cell phone video camera has done a lot to catch criminals but the public is also using them to expose police misconduct.
