I'm asking for some educated advice not a rude scolding  from some othe the angry ones on here.

what do you all think about a newborn puppy (now 5 days old) with one ear? He had  split ear at first but I think maybe it either fell off or she licked it off.

He is eating well but ???

Should he be put down or can he have a life?

Rude people ... please keep you rudeness to yourselves.

thanks

If it's just the soft part of the exterior ear, the part that is supposed to stand on a GSD, and if the pup has a patent ear canal I don't know why it wouldn't be able to lead a normal, healthy life.

did you think to go see a vet with this pup?

The hole ear is gone and they have not opened up yet. So there is nothing to stand ever. I am worried about debry falling into it later in life

Or should I not worry about that.

If I do not cull him, I will find him a proper home after being fixed (neutered)

The Vet is has a message to call me... It's Saturday and I'll be lucky if I get a call.

The puppy was born with an ear sort of a double split ear that is now GONE.?

If it's the "ear flap" that's gone and there's a "ear canal" then he should be ok...But I'd get him into see your vet as soon as you can...Probably Monday will be the soonest...

Is there any open sore or raw skin...Like where the ear was attached? If so you can put a very thin coat of "Neosporin" on it...It won't hurt anything and might help heal where the ear was...

First off  ... THANKS to you  all for your kind advice.

There is  a raw spot where the ear will open up and it has been like that from the start and a little reddish. Not so much where the ear flap was.

I have a picture if I knew how to  put it on here.

I have put a dab of really excellent antibiotic medication for horses it  is called Vetericyn.

Then I held the Bitch back from licking it off... I will do it again .

"Vetericyn" is good stuff...That should do just fine...I wouldn't even worry about mama licking it off...It's gonna happen...It's now just a wait and see how it goes...Just keep an eye on it and you can put a little more "Vetericyn" on it a few times a day...Just a thin layer...

Hi, Rebecca. My bet is that during delivery, the mother dog accidentally pinched the ear, causing it to fall off and would explain the 'split' and redness. Pinching with her teeth would also stop bleeding. Sometimes in an effort to pinch off the sack, the pups skin can inadvertently get pinched. I had a pup with a scrape between his ears that developed into a harry potter looking scar. Nature hates a void, so I would expect the skin to grow in a way to compensate for no ear leather. No need to kill him because of a mother's mistake.

And I would like to add that unless you are going to show this puppy no need to worry about his/her ear;  however, I would look the puppy over very well for any other type of birth defects;  external and watch for anything internal, check for chelph palate, etc.  Mama dogs are very instinctive, she could have possibly thought something else was wrong with one of her perfect puppies or it could have just been an accident by her, like Joanro said sometimes they nip where they shouldn't.  But as long as the pup is thriving well, eating and not being rejected by the bitch then all is good to go.  Best of luck with checkup.  Nan
