Blitzen, judging by this photo, Rumor sure LOOKS to be a hock-walker:

I can't watch the video as I am over my monthly limit for internet downloads, so videos stream is painfully slooooow!  Sad Smile

Well, Sunsilver......that just goes to show you how unreliable a photo can be (lol).

You know what dog I really liked......# 16....Alkarah's Rocket Red Glare

SS, girl, that's is not a hock walker, that is the way pro handlers set up GSD's in the AKC ring to exagerate the topline slope. Every ASL GSD is set up that way in the show ring. Look at a photo of Dallas. According to your defintion he too is a hockwalker. Hock walkers have sickle hocks that they can't open up enough to allow the rear foot to stike the ground at full stride. Instead of the dog's being propelled forward by the thrust of the foot pushing the ground it has to use it's hock. You must see the dog moving to make that judgement, not standing still posed for the dog show ring.

That's a good choice I think, LMH, another good dog in that mix. I only see one I would not have considered to be worthy of BOB in that group, a dog with flat feet. I don't know the judge, but I think she did a really good job. Not an easy class to judge, too many good ones to pick from.

I watched till 13.45 when they changed the dogs.
I don´t like the forehands at all, a lot of dogs are not "firm", and I don´t like the "gaiting" (?). They moved a couple of steps, and that´s it?
The handlers don´t need visible double handling, because the dogs don´t move ( the owner just needs to move half a round walking slowly ).
And no judge would do this kind of excessive touching of the dogs over here, and they know why...
Not only the standard is different, but the temperament, too.

I´m not judging, just observing, so please, don´t kill me...

Blitzen, that's not just a hock-walker, it's a pastern-walker too!  Omg Smile  Poor thing!

Susie, most shows in N. America have larger rings, so the dogs can show off their gaiting a lot better. The small rings at Westminister do make it difficult for the larger breeds! :(

Susie, I don't think very many GSL people will ever understand what ASL breeders are breeding for and vice versa. I rarely see any GSL people at AKC shows or ASL breeders at SV shows.  My friend and I are usually the odd balls out since we go to both and she shows in both. When I do see a GSD person looking at a different line, I am always amused by the looks of horror I see on their faces. The ASL people don't get the toplines and the restricted side gaits of the GSL's and the GSL people can't get past the ASL heads and big side gaits. Both I see are prone to bad pasterns, dyed coats, splay feet, cowhocks and dead tails, so those things seem to be accepted or unrecognized by both. ALS people don't get it that the German judges don't check teeth and testicles themselves and can see catologs while they judge and the GSL people don't understand why the AKC judges have to be so touchy feely and dress in shirts and ties. Honestly I wouldn't give you 10 cents for the difference in these dogs if I were comparing their conformation good and bad points. One is about as good or as faulty as the other; just in different ways. If I ever make it to the Sieger I might be singing a different tune.

It truly is east is east and west is west and never the twain shall meet. It makes for an interesting debate though, doesn't it?
