5 weeks ago I changed to a grain free dried food ( several available, I went for Lily's Kitchen) and bathed him (once so far) in Nizoral anti dandruff shampoo from Boots. The results are amazing, I wish I had taken some before and after pics to prove how bad his skin was, within the first week the scratching stopped the nasty yellow turning black scaly skin had gone and his hair has grown back. I know now that yeast was the cause of his suffering and wish I had found this simple and inexpensive fix long ago.If your dog is suffering similar problems, give it a go.

Yep .. cutting out some grains can work wonders for some GSD as well .. a raw diet is a lot cheaper than vet bills and a healthy dog is well worth feeding raw. Probably an immune system reaction to something in the food ich could be genetic or caused by an immune system reaction to vaccinations or some other pathogen or pollutant which has altered your dog's immune system.

Lenihacy, it's not as simple as changing diet. You need to treat for Candida, most likely, so I would put him on a very good enzyme/probiotic combo and then maybe revisit the raw. Once the gut is damaged, simply switching food without treating the problem will not yield 100% success.

For my older GSD especially females when they reach 6-7 years of age thyroid problems are common and they can result in skin problems. I feed the raw thyroid ( once called Armour ) to the dogs and see if I get a response after a couple of weeks. The treatment is cheap and forget the vets as they prefer to run a few hundred dollars worth of tests. I had one female who was tested and was proclaimed within the normal range yet when I gave her the thyroid treatment using the raw treatment (not synthetic) she recovered completely.

Bubba, how much Armour were you giving those girls and were you doing it for skin issues or conception problems or both?

And what is the full name and where do you buy it. Sounds like something that should be on hand especially if you have 5 older ones like me.
Thank you for telling us about this product

Western Rider, you have to be careful with Armour as far as dosage. That's why I asked. Since it is actual hormone and not just a stimulant like the synthetic thyroid meds, there is a bit of a trick to it. Dr. Dodds discusses it.

Thank you Jenni78 I will put that on my reading list. There is just so much to learn about caring for our dogs.

Fred Lanting also discusses it. You could Google his name and thryoid. I should've bookmarked it but I wasn't thinking. Sorry.
