Last night my kids wanted me to watch the movie Eight Below with them. I saw it was "Disney" (not annimated)and really wasn't interested until they begged and pleaded saying "mom you'll really really like it, it's about working dogs saving their owner and it was a true story".So I watched it and folks I gotta tell ya if you get a chance to see this movie you won't be sorry. Just have a box of tissue next to you cause it's a tear jerker-even the fella's who really love their dogs and work hard training will probably choke back a tear. I won't give the movie away but it's about 8 husky's owned by this guy who has to take this doctor out into antartica for a scientific study, in the midst the dogs save the doctor's life twice as he falls into icy waters. When they get rescued the plane has no room for the tour guide's dogs (he owns them), at first he refuses to leave the dogs behind but his injuries are serious enough that he must leave before this big storm comes. They assure him they will return immediately to pick up the dogs. So he ties them all up so they can't get loose and they all leave. In the meantime when he wakes at the hospital and is told they weren't able to fly back to get the dogs cause of weather conditions he freaks out; the dogs are gonna die, they can't get loose to even have a chance. He tries to get help. someone, anyone to take him to get his dogs who saved not only his life but the doctor too. No help for anyone, not even the doctor! (piece of &*$%) No planes to fly there til spring-over 150 days passed before anyone could go rescue these dogs....you gotta watch the movie to see their adventure and what ever happend to them all. There is so much truth to the relationship man has with his dogs and the level of respect and loyalty they have to their owners. Just the training that went into these husky's for the movie was truly amazing. If anyone has seen it or does happen to get a chance to watch it on DVD let me know what you thought of it.

Most, maybe all of those dogs were rescued dogs. How's that for a feel good story? I liked it alot, have had Malamutes for many years and 2 of the dogs in the movie are Mals.

It really was a good movie. Most of the dogs in the long shots are working sled dogs and really do this type of work on a daily basis.

APS--
The movie was very good--the dogs were really remarkable. I sat on the edge of my seat throughout the whole picture. Gets your heart pumping for real because it's a true story. As for the Bruce Greenwood character---certainly took his sweet time to do the right thing. Extremely sad at times. Get out the Kleenex, for sure.

I think it was just "based on a true story" - in reality 7 out of 9 of the dogs died :-(

Saw it in the theatre... and my boyfriend cried! He can't see the sad stories on Animal Planet... and this is also one of those he doesn't wish to see again because it makes him so sad (or rather mad at the people that wouldn't help - you tell him it isn't real ;). I, on the other hand, loved it and would see it again. Rarely are there movies where the dogs really are the star of the show... and for those that know little to nothing about sledding... it is also informative.

I saw it at the movies house and also on TV. I lost a dog once for 9 days and it was h_ll! I can only imagine what that poor guy was going thru, never mind the dogs. The dogs were awesome in the movie...
tighe I like the movie version better...

Yes, it was based on a true story and most did not survive.
Here's bit more interesting information for you people in rescue. One of the Malamutes was rescued by a sledddog rescue managed by an acquaintance. She did everything right, tried to find his rightful owner, etc.. No luck. The dog was not chipped, had no tats. He was in horrible shape and looked like he had either been on the run for some time or was not cared for properly for quite a while. The rescue had him for months before the Disney trainers adopted him for the movie.
Long story short, this sleddog rescue is now being sued by people who claim this dog is their dog that was lost or stolen almost a year prior to the movie and that they tried to find him for months with no luck. They insist they contacted the rescue and were told he was not there. There is no record of their ever having contacted the rescue or of their being there. Evidentally, when they saw the movie, they decided that was their missing dog and it just escalted from there.
Of course we are all thinking that they assume this this dog will end up in more movies and could generate some money for them, so that's why they want him back. Who knows if it is or isn't their dog. They can't prove it is, rescue can't prove it isn't. We are all hoping it ends up in favor of the rescue organization. A ruling in favor of the plaintiffs could change the way all rescues do business in the future.
