thanks!

Give us a little help -  how much do you already know about

this dog's background ?  Is he a recent Rescue, without papers,

for example ?  Which country/State are you in ?  Could the dog

be from a different one ?  Are you sure there isn't a further

number deeper in the ear ?   That tattoo is not one from any

register I would immediately recognise, but others will do so.

One possibility in your case is

Kennel name beginning with M

Litter C

Puppy B (  a-z = 1-26)

Year ( 2006) =06

If the kennel used a 6 digit tattoo it might be different so make sure the tattoo is only 5 digits.  If your dog is 7 years old approximately the 06 could be the year of birth.

Very often the tattoo is in format kennel name ( MC) , litter (B) and puppy # in the litter (06) according to birth or registration # via AKC  .. normally there should be a year but depending on the kennel they may not produce many puppies or litters so they leave off the year.  Tattoos are OK but most people can't read them and unless you know the kennel or have some information in addition to the tattoo you are not going to get far.  Tattoos are a good addition to chips but the chips are usually more useful in providing detailed information.  A tattoo indicates the dog is likely registered while the chip gives more information if you have access to a chip reader.  Probably best is to tattoo and chip in two places as chips can migrate and become unreadable.  Scan for a chip .. most are in the chest and front shoulder area but they can migrate so look carefully and with patience.

Overall I agree with Bubba,  but what he says about the letter/number

system is mostly useful for privately tattooed -by- breeder dogs in the USA.

Fine if you are in the US*;  not quite so relevant if you are based elsewhere

or the dog is known to be imported from another country (for instance, where tattooing on a national basis is more common, or breeders may have more complicated and personal numbering systems).  *There is also a national

US tattoo service, but it is woefully under-used.

Agree you should search carefully, if you get access to a chip reader, for

a migrated microchip - particularly likely, given if he has one it was probably inserted while he was young;  the tech. has improved  a bit over recent years.

[Finding & reading details from a chip may not be the end of your problems

however - it is also sometimes difficult to trace where the records are held

& by which company !]
