I use yarn of different colors
it's cheap, and can be replaced every few days to keep it clean and visible

I was too neurotic to tie anything on them so I put nail polish on the tips of their tails. It took me a couple of days after birth to do it. Mom didn't seem to mind it either.

I use different color rickrack and it goes on once they are cleaned up and dried and given back to mom.. can be changed as needed ..

you are able to microchip at birth??? that thing looks huge, have some here now and I'm taking everyone to the vets to be chipped and looked over....
