Links to news stories on the PBS web site and FRONTLINE .. the news and documentary program.  40 years after the FDA and NIH warned and tried to stop the use and misuse of antibiotics to treat animals in feedlots and industrial agriculture to promote weight gain and profits, the payment for the corruption of the US Congress, the veterinary medicine apparatus, the animal feed industry, and big Pharma has come due.  Money bought our congress, politicians and regulators to prevent management of antibiotic resistance in farm animals.  Now we stand at the brink of the abyss when millions will die due to antibiotic resistance and the people who profited most ( the big Pharma corporations ) seem willing to let millions die because there is no profit in it for them.  I have worked in biology and with resistance to control agents .. the Frontline presentations are mild and soft compared to the reality of antibiotic resistance on what will be a global scale.  Very quickly in our future we can expect restrictions and quarantines to affect the movements of people, animals, meat, milk, plants, such that our food supply and travel will be affected.  The use of offal and infected or uninspected meats in pet foods will likely be curtailed or restricted as there is no reason to expect that dog food maufacturers will be allowed to ship bags of pet food around the world with no assurance that the food or packaging is not going to harbor antibiotic resistant disease agents when it is often derived from products which can be infected.
