I found this ad in the ebay classifieds. Can anyone tell me if I'm seeing a purebred GSD in the 2nd picture? I thought it looked mixed. Or is it a color pattern and structure I'm not used to seeing in a GSD because these are "extra large old fashioned" from breeders with 10 years of experience. Or, maybe I'm just ignorant...hmm.

I'd. Like to know what y'all think. Thanks!

says this about the dogs;

Dad comes from impeccable working lines and is a fearless and super loving big boy. Mom comes from the famous and very old Rin Tin TIn dogs, search and rescue dogs and therapy dogs.

Had to make your link clickable so I could see it. Cut and paste wasn't bringing up the ad.

Aaand, of course, the server is unavailable!  What Smile

I do know this about the Rin Tin Tin dogs. The main breeder of these dogs, Daphne Hereford, has refused to go with the current trends in AKC style shepherds, and tried to keep the dogs true to the type of the original Rin Tin Tin. As a result, these dogs DO look quite different from either the current German lines, or the American lines.

Here's one of their females:

You can see Daphne has made an effort to stay true to the type of GSD that existed during World War I, which is when the original Rinty was found in a bombed-out kennel in France. The dogs have a squarer build, less angulation, and straight, level backs. And yes, unlike the dogs from the '50's TV show, the original Rinty was a sable!

Edited to add: I have now managed to view the ad, though the pictures are too small to see any detail However, Daphne Hereford lives in Texas, so I am fairly sure this is a dog from her breeding. She usually only sells on limited registration, except in very rare instances, to keep unscrupulous people from trying to exploit and make money off the Rin Tin Tin name, so I am rather surprised to see this ad.

Maybe this link will work better...SS, your link brings up the ad in mobile format, but the pics are so small you can't really see much and they aren't clickable to enlarge.

Here's the breeder's website.

Rather pricey for puppies with limited AKC registration, out of parents with no mention of any titles, working certifications or health clearances, and the breeder most DEFINITELY is not breeding to any recognized breed standard--SV or AKC--since they're using whites and blues as breeding stock. The dam of these pups is apparently AKC-registered as a German Shepherd Dog, and perhaps she is one, but if you told me she was a Malamute/Shepherd mix [formerly called 'North American Shepalute' that had it's own breed registry, similar to the original Shiloh Shepherds story], or a Tamaskan Dog, or a Northern Inuit Dog, or an American Tundra Shepherd, I'd be more inclined to think that was an accurate identification.

For the same prices as these pups, a person can easily find well-bred GSD pups from parents that are at the very LEAST been through the appropriate health assays and evaluations, conform to the one of the major recognized breed standards, with full registration--and pups from parents that are titled and/or have some verifiable, third-party confirmed work certifications can be found that have all of the previously-mentioned qualities to offer, too.

To each their own, though, I guess.

Edited to add: SS, though the dam of the pups may be out of Hereford's breeding lines, the ad isn't hers.

Thank you all for replying...very informative. I'm a curious person by nature, and I'm always asking questions. So, apologies for my confusion or ignorance.

Hexe, were you able to get the thumbnails to open? I couldn't

Yes, I knew it wasn't Daphne selling the dogs. She would never advertise on E-Bay classifieds, and she sells her dogs for a LOT more than $1,500! She would never deliberately breed to blue or blue carriers, either. However, as the white GSDs didn't go with the extremes of the regular coloured GSDs, and Daphne was trying to stay with the old-fashioned look of the original dogs, she did bring in white dogs to her lines. Tina Barber (the Shiloh breed founder) did the same, with Hoofprint Orbit, one of her outcrossess. Orbit has several of the Rin Tin Tin dogs in his pedigree, which is how I originally found out about Daphne and the Rin Tin Tin line dogs.

SS, couldn't get them to open with your link, but I can with the one I posted.

The dogs in the 50's TV series were sables if you look close enough.

The second dog looks like a husky to me.
