There are many very nice West German and Belgian kennels, that produce fantastic dogs. These lines are superior to DDR or Czech lines in many regards, most important, nerves. If you look at top sport results you see few pure DDR or Czech dogs that do well. DDR or Czech mixed with West German or Belgian lines is a different story. The reason you see so many people jumping on the Czech band wagon is simple, you can get these dogs cheap. I have seen few pure DDR or Czech dogs that I like, but thats just me.

I agree with Zahnburg. The DDR/Czech blood look good but you never see them at the top of competition... There are many West German Working kennels bringing in the East blood but it is not because of working ability or nerves that is for sure. It is because of head, bone and pigment period... I guess I have to say I no not agree with Hudguy or Zahnburg. My male is DDR/Czech and he is just awesome as a working and show dog. We work in SAR and do a lot of AKC shows that I have found is much harder than anything i've ever done in Sch. and he has made many first and secod places in show. Also I can ask this dog to do anything from open doors to picking things up things I drop and He will bring me the phone when it rings and much more. I guess what I'm trying to say is If you do your homework and put in the time a dog can be awesome no matter if their west German, East German or Czech...

jbrown, as a point of reference, how many dogs have you gotten Schutzhund titles on and what were they?

I see what all yall are saying. Yes most commonly you see west german working lines on the top sport level. And yes any line is capable of competing in top sport. Personally I think that if I was going to buy a top sport dog you would be best off buying a west german workingline dog, but honestly if I was buying a dog for realk life work like police or military I would get a czech line dog. Although every dog is different, its best to just go with the majority.

Hey Jbrown. I have no doubt that you have a fine dog and it sounds like he is everything you want in a GSD. I was reffering to reproduction and the different traits that seem to come through different bloodlines. DJ

I dont see where that matters what I've done. I've done more with my dogs than most have. I dont pay anyone to title my dogs nor do I buy my dogs already titled. If I want a title on my dogs I do it myself. All I was saying is most any breed dog can be worked or trained if you just try..

jbrown, It was just for a point of reference since you were saying the other two people didn't know what they were talking about. When you stated that SAR and AKC show were harder than anything you had done in Schutzhund, I just wondered how far you had gotten or if you were full of.... Well now I know. You haven't even gotten a BH.
